Choosing a Location for a Pond
Find a location for your pond.
- The pond should be on level, well-drained ground.
- Try to keep the site close to an outdoor ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet, and plan the most direct line possible between the house and the pond for the pump power cord.
- Make sure the site isn't directly over underground pipes, cables, sewer lines, septic fields, etc.
- Ensure there's a nearby outdoor faucet so you can add water to the pond from a garden hose as needed.
- Consider sun and shade. The more direct sunlight the pond receives each day, the more choices of water plants you have. If you plan to add fish to the pond, balance the sun with some shade during the hottest part of the day by adding water lilies or lotus pads, plants or shrubs, or a portable shade screen. Small ponds benefit from partial shade since high water temperatures promote excessive algae growth and increase water evaporation.
- Avoid large trees and areas subject to strong winds. Leaves and needles can contaminate the water and accumulate on the bottom of the pond, blocking the pump and filtration system.
Before beginning any excavation, call 811 to check for underground utilities.
Make sure your plans comply with homeowners association guidelines and local building codes.
Install a Pond With a Shell Liner
The instructions below describe building a two-tier pond with a waterfall. We’ll use a preformed shell liner for the pond and a flexible pond liner to create the waterfall. The pond water will circulate by a pump and filtration system. We’ll add decorative rock and plants to landscape around the pond. Always follow the instructions for your pond products.
We're going to be using the shell for the base of the pond. You can find these in various shapes and sizes, and we’re using one that’s about 5-feet by 4-feet and about 18 inches deep at the deepest point. For the waterfall, we're going to use a flexible liner so we can determine the shape.
If you plan to have fish or snails in your pond, talk to an aquatic animals supplier before you begin your project. In addition to helping you select the right varieties, they can help you determine the correct pond size and depth for the animals.
Pond shells can be heavy and unwieldy. Enlist a helper for this project.

Create a Pond With a Flexible Liner
As an alternative to a pond made with a preformed shell, you can use a flexible liner and create a pond in a custom shape. General steps are below, but always follow the instructions for your pond products.
Buy a liner that’s 10 to 12 inches larger than the planned layout of your pond. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for specifics. Below are example pond dimensions for several liner sizes.
Plan to install the liner on a warm, sunny day. Spread it out on warm pavement for 15 to 20 minutes to make it easier to handle.

Maintaining Your Pond
There are a variety of treatment products available to keep your pond a clean and safe environment for plants and animals, including:
- Algaecide
- Barley pond cleaner (to keep pond water clear)
- Chorine remover
- Sludge remover
- Pond tint
Maintain your pump and filter according to the manufacturer instructions. Make sure your fountain always has sufficient water. If the pump isn't submerged in water, the motor may continue to operate and burn out.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions when using pond care or fountain care chemicals to ensure they're safe for plants and animals.
