Caulk Types
There are two main types of caulk. Latex caulk works well on porous and nonporous surfaces and is ideal for projects like filling in gaps between crown moulding and baseboards. It can also be painted, making it easy to blend in with its surroundings. Silicone caulk is best for nonporous surfaces only and is a great choice for gaps or cracks that may expand or contract. You’ll want to apply this kind in wet areas, around sinks or tubs, to keep water from leaking and pooling on the floor.
Specialty caulks, designed to complete specific tasks, are also an option. They include concrete caulk for filling in driveway or sidewalk cracks, kitchen and bath caulk for backsplash tile installation, and roofing caulk for stopping small roof leaks, among other things.
Some Caulking Tips
With the right caulking tools and know-how on applying caulk, caulking can be an easy do-it-yourself project for the weekend. Once you’ve determined what type of caulk you need, you’ll also need to decide if you’ll use a caulking gun or other dispensing tool for application. Caulk comes in either a squeeze tube or a cartridge, which fits into the gun and offers a more consistent bead for better results.
If you need to remove old caulk, use a caulk remover tool to help scrape it away. It may also be beneficial to use an appropriate solution to soften the caulk to make it easier to remove. Once the old is gone, clean the surface to prepare it for the new sealant.
Taping off surfaces with painters tape offers a visual for where you want the caulk to end. Make sure it’s securely pressed down so the caulk can’t get underneath.
To dispense the caulk, you’ll need to cut the tip of the nozzle and puncture the inner seal with a long wire. It’s best to work slowly while still squeezing hard enough to get the caulk in the gap.
After it’s applied, smooth out the caulk with water or rubbing alcohol, depending on the type of caulk you used, to get rid of any excess.

When it comes to tackling caulking projects in the bathroom, kitchen or your home’s exterior, choosing the right caulk for the area of your home will ensure the project’s success. For example, when working to secure glass in the shower door or a loose frame, you’ll want to use glass caulk. Masonry caulk offers the best repair and protection for your brick and stone needs. And metal caulk helps seal areas where flashing, ductwork or metal pipes are present. We even offer siding caulk to help secure and repair loose pieces of siding on your home’s exterior.
