Electrical Outlets
Electrical outlets allow you to power your home. It's important to follow all of the safety practices when using the outlets. Be mindful of the number of things and the amount of power they will need. Overloading or overpowering your outlets can lead to fire or electrical shock. There are outlets for inside your home as well as outside. The outlets come in various sizes depending on the size of the electrical box. The most common types are 2-gang outlets and 3-gang outlets. This means they have either two or three electrical elements side by side.
Types of Outlets

Two-Pronged vs. Three-Pronged
For areas with appliances that have minimum voltage requirements, the two or three-pronged 15A 120-volt outlet is perfect. These are the most affordable types of outlets but can be a bit dated. The two-pronged outlet is not grounded and has two connection slots, while the three-pronged outlet includes a ground pin along with two slots to prevent shocks.
GFCI Outlets
GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets, are ideal for areas that could be exposed to water or moisture. Typically, any outdoor outlets would be GFCI and come with a waterproof cover in case of adverse weather conditions. These outlets can also be found in bathrooms or laundry rooms with a test and reset button. This feature is included to allow the current flow to trip, or turn off if there is an electrical spike.
AFCI Outlets
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets are ideal for areas where you may not always be alert, such as bedrooms. This type of outlet protects against arching which is caused by loose contact points. At these loose contact points, electricity can jump between connections, causing a spark or buzzing sound.
Switched Outlets
Switched outlets are perfect for areas where you want to leave things plugged in. This includes lights and other appliances. You can use the switch to power the appliance on or off without unplugging it. These don't need any extra wiring for installation.
USB Outlets
USB outlets are super convenient. You don't need to have any charging blocks because it connects the USB cord directly to the outlet. These outlets are usually shared with a two-pronged outlet.
Outlet Covers and Wall Plates
Each outlet will come equipped with wall plates. These electrical outlet covers protect the wiring inside of the electrical boxes of your outlets. They also prevent moisture and dust from entering the electrical box. These outlet covers can come in various materials, styles and colors. This makes it easy to coordinate with your desired theme. There are traditional outlet covers that have screws, and there are screwless outlet covers. The screwless outlet covers provide a professional appearance. They're also the most child-proof type of outlet covers.
Smart Plugs
Smart plugs are used to automate your home. This is an energy-efficient way to control your electricity usage. You can schedule on and off times with these plugs and control them with voice commands. They can improve the safety of your home by allowing you to control the outlet from a remote location. This makes it easier to appear as though you're home to discourage break-ins. Smart plugs make it easier to start your day by allowing you to start coffee makers and kettles from the comfort of your bed.
