Getting Started

Tile
When working with tile, you’ll want to have several supplies on hand to make your job easier. In addition to tile spacers, you’ll need an adhesive to hold the tile in place. While some people prefer mastic to thinset, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s application guidelines when laying tile in a wet area, like a shower.
Ensure your workshop is stocked with a tile cutter. There are several different varieties to choose from, including manual cutters, snap cutters and wet-tile saws. Make your selection based on your experience level and project size. For example, if you’re only working with two or three tiles, you may want to use a tile nipper or jigsaw for the job. For larger projects, a tile installation kit may be the best choice. You’ll also need a tile saw, which can cut a variety of tile, including natural stone, pavers, ceramic and porcelain.
Remember to pick up tile edge trim when you’re stocking up on supplies. These pieces will help you give your project a professional and finished look.
Carpet
In addition to a leveling compound, tackless strips or carpet tack strips, you’ll want to have carpet pad, carpet tape and carpet staplers on hand. Working from the longest wall in the room, you’ll use your carpet cutter to ensure a perfect fit.
