Moulding

Choose Your Moulding Type

Décor moulding comes in four main types, all of which are installed in generally the same way. For a low-maintenance option, architectural moulding can be handled like wood, but it's lighter and doesn't warp, rot or split. Decorative moulding hides imperfections where the corners of the moulding join, especially if you use corner blocks. Pre-finished moulding is a budget-friendly alternative to wood that comes in woodgrain patterns so you can still achieve the same look. Because the finish is already applied, this type of moulding is ready to install right when you purchase it. The most common décor moulding used in homes is unfinished solid wood moulding, made from pine or hardwood, and comes in many different profiles to fit different styles.

If you have grand plans to put moulding in multiple rooms, consider a pro pack that contains multiple pieces of moulding that come in different lengths to meet your needs.

Elegant Walls and Ceilings

Create a smooth transition from wall to ceiling with crown moulding that suits your interior design sensibilities. Lowe's offers styles such as architectural, modern, colonial, contemporary and traditional in a variety of materials like wood or MDF. Depending on your capacity for do-it-yourself projects, you can choose to start with completely finished or painted moulding, or you can personalize unfinished or primed moulding.

Give your room a pop of style with picture frame moulding that showcases wallpaper or wall color — create the look with panel moulding or browse pre-assembled frames. Protect your walls and add character with a chair rail moulding that adds a sophisticated accent to dining rooms, or any other room you choose.

Polished Floors, Doors and Windows

Cover gaps between floorboards or carpets and your walls with baseboard, base shoe or base cap moulding. Decide whether or not a squared or notched baseboard coordinates best with your other moulding, and pick a size that makes sense for the size of your room. If you're not sure what size of baseboard will work best in your home, refer to our Moulding Buying Guide

Tie everything together with door and window casing to frame the features of your room. Like most moulding, casing is functional as well as decorative and covers any space left between the drywall and the door or window frames. Corner blocks will hide any miter cuts you need to make to the edges of the moulding and give you a clean result.

Accent Pieces for the Perfect Finish

For other projects, general-purpose moulding like corner, lattice and screen bead moulding make do-it-yourself shelving or personalizing projects easy. Add ornate touches to your décor with appliques, millwork or rosettes for a purely decorative touch. Use corbels in entryway corners and add plinths to the bottom of door casings. Display precious items using niches, and secure or accentuate lights with sconces. If you need some help with the many moulding terms, our Moulding Glossary is a quick reference guide.
