Water pumps serve many purposes, from watering lawns and gardens to moving unwanted water from basements and more. At Lowe’s, we have water pumps for every application including sump pumps, pool pumps, water well pumps and more. Not sure which type of water pump you need? Below, we’ll break down some popular pump types and their uses.
Types of Water Pumps
Sump pumps channel water away from the foundation of homes and other areas where standing water is unwanted. Once a sump pump is filled, it pushes water out and away through a discharge pipe. Sump pumps are designed to handle clean ground water only. They aren’t meant to channel water from a washing machine or water softener and shouldn’t be used to circulate water in fountains and ornamental ponds.
There are two main types of sumps pumps: pedestal and submersible. With a pedestal pump, the motor is on a shaft above the pump and out of the water. These are typically the less expensive option. But because they aren’t cooled by water in the sump, there’s a greater risk of overheating them with extreme use. A submersible pump rests at the bottom of the sump, surrounded by cooling water.

Well pumps provide water from nearby underground sources to homes. There are a few types of well pumps including shallow well pumps, convertible jet pumps and deep well pumps. A shallow well pump sits above ground and is designed for water 25 feet or less. Convertible jet pumps sit above ground and are designed for water 25 feet to around 100 feet deep. Deep well subversive pumps feature a single pipe that sits inside a well and connects to a pressure tank. They’re built for water anywhere from 25 to 400 feet deep.
Utility pumps are the most versatile of all pump types and are ideal for emergency situations. Whether you need to remove water from a flooded basement or drain a hot water tank, a utility pump, also known as a transfer pump, will remove water quickly and efficiently. They’re available in subversive and nonsubversive designs and come in manual and automatic options.
Sprinkler pumps are intended to pump water from wells, lakes and other sources to in-ground irrigation systems. A sprinkler pump is an ideal choice for homeowners wanting a simple, more cost-effective way to keep their lawn and garden regularly watered and healthy.
Water Tanks
A pressure tank functions as a water reserve in instances of power outages and other emergencies. Pressure tanks, known as well tanks, also protect and extend the life of water pumps by reducing the strain on the electrical components of the pump.
Whether you’re looking for a utility electric water pump to do it all or a specialty option like a lawn pump to keep your garden growing, we have all of the water pumps and tanks you need. Simply need to cover an unsightly well pump? We even carry covers, like artificial rocks, to help pumps seamlessly blend into your yard.
