Keep Your Lawn and Garden Beautiful and Weed-Free
Almost everyone faces weeds in their lawn and garden at least now and again. But you can treat the green spaces around your home with powerful, effective weed killers and keep your lawn and garden beautiful and weed-free with minimal effort. Find the best weed killer for your lawn at Lowe's.
Discourage Weed Growth
One of the best ways to discourage weed growth is to create the right growing conditions for the plants and flowers that make your lawn and garden beautiful. Incorrect watering and fertilization, poor drainage, compacted soil, improper sunlight, insect damage, excessive wear on the land and disease can all make it difficult to grow the garden you want and could encourage weed growth.
Disease Control
Care for the plants and flowers you love with fungicides. They act like medicine for your garden and help keep your plants healthy. Fungicides prevent and treat common plant maladies like brown patch, yellow patch, summer patch, pink patch, southern and typhula blight, necrotic ring spot, powdery mildew, stem and stripe rust, red thread, pythium, and more for weeks at a time. Be sure to check the label to see what plants can benefit and for how long. Some fungicides are rain-resistant for weeks and can be used on lawns, trees, fruit, nuts and vegetables.
Destroy Weeds Before They Sprout
You can also prevent weed growth with a pre-emergent herbicide, a solution that destroys weeds before they sprout. Pre-emergent herbicides are generally selective, destroying certain types of weeds and leaving other plants unharmed. Read the labels carefully to see which weeds are controlled and which plants or plant beds to avoid when using. Some should not be used on lawns or soil that will grow producing fruit, vegetables or flowers.
Kill Weeds on Contact
Other herbicides work after the weeds have appeared. These are
generally very powerful and work quickly, sometimes in half an hour. Be sure to
spray them directly only the weeds because they can harm the surrounding
plants, too.
Treat Areas With High Foot Traffic
Some preparations are formulated to work on targeted areas. Some
can quickly banish weeds from high foot traffic areas such as walkways,
driveways and sidewalks. Other weed preventers target specific intruders, like
crabgrass.
Natural and Organic Weed Killer
Natural and organic weed killers typically employ natural
ingredients like salt, citrus oil or ammoniated soap of fatty acids to kill
weeds. Use them carefully, though, to avoid unintentional damage to your garden
or lawn. They are generally non-selective weed killers and will kill any plants
they come in contact with.
Physical Weed Barriers
There are physical weed barriers, too. They work to prevent weeds
from emerging by blocking the things they need to survive. Plastic weed
barriers cut out sun, water and air and make it difficult for the growth to
emerge through the material. Some can be used for up to 30 years. You’ll need
to cut around the plastic to let your other plants grow. Geotextile weed
barriers have a similar texture to burlap and allow air and water to come
through, but not sun, and generally last three to five years.
A little care can give you an attractive, thriving lawn and garden
that makes your home beautiful and welcoming and increases curb appeal. Get the
right tools to banish weeds and keep your grounds flourishing.
