Project Overview
Transform your outdoor space into a warm and inviting retreat with a custom-built fire pit using 40 pieces of the Pavestone 18-in L x 3-in H x 9-in D Granite Concrete Nova Wall Block, construction adhesive, and lava rock. This project is perfect for enhancing your backyard ambiance and creating a gathering spot for family and friends.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Select and Prepare the Site
○ Choose a flat, open area away from overhanging trees and structures.
○ Clear the site of any grass, rocks, or debris.
○ Use the shovel to dig a hole approximately 4 inches deep and with a diameter slightly larger than your fire pit's outside dimensions (45” x 45” square); this will help to create a stable and level foundation for your fire pit kit.
2. Create a Base (if not building on an existing footer)
○ Fill the hole with paver base or gravel to a depth of about 2 inches.
○ Use the tamper to compact the base.
○ Then, level with sand.
1. TIP: If building on an existing footer or concrete patio, you can skip the above, and instead, use QUIKRETE mortar to help level the first course.
3. Lay the First Layer of Blocks
○ Arrange the first layer of Pavestone blocks in a square, ensuring the blocks fit tightly together.
1. TIP: 8 pieces/layer, 5 layers
○ Use a level to check that the blocks are even, and adjust, as necessary. Ensuring level on the first course is key, as any issues will be reflected to a greater degree, the higher up the fire pit is built.
○ Apply construction adhesive between each block to secure them in place.
4. Build the Subsequent Layers
○ In building subsequent layers, stagger the joints by placing each block centered over the seam of the blocks below.
○ Apply construction adhesive between each block and layer to add stability; continue to ensure level.
○ Continue this process until you have built up to five layers, using approximately 40 blocks, in total.
5. Final Touches
○ Fill the bottom of the cavity with sand or other decorative rock, and allow the construction adhesive to cure, according to the manufacturer's instructions, before using the fire pit.
Safety Tips
• Ensure the fire pit is a safe distance from flammable materials.
• Always keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of sand nearby.
• Never leave the fire unattended, and ensure it is completely extinguished after use.
