Beds, Frames and Mattresses
Since we spend almost 1/3 of our lives sleeping, it's important to have the right bed. We'll break down everything you need for the perfect night's rest.
Beds
A bed is the foundational piece of furniture that you'll put your mattress on. Some of the most popular types of beds include:
Platform: For those who prefer a sleek, modern look, consider the platform bed. Platform beds have a low profile that sits closer to the ground. The base is a flat, wooden box that can support a mattress without using a box spring. If you're a DIYer, try one of these two projects:

Panel: Another popular type is the panel bed. Panel beds typically consist of a headboard, footboard and side rails. They're available in metal, wood or an upholstered finish. A box spring is required with a panel bed.
Upholstered: A bed that's upholstered can either be a panel or a platform bed. But instead of having a wood or metal exterior, it's wrapped in fabric such as velvet, linen, cotton or polyester. There are also different finishes including nailheads, tufted, channel backing, wingback and more.
Murphy: If you're short on space in a small bedroom or office, consider a Murphy bed. Murphy beds fold up into the wall, so they're compact and convenient when you have guests. If you'd like to build your own, try this DIY Murphy Bed project.
Frames
If you prefer not to have a headboard or footboard and simply want something to elevate your mattress and box spring, you'll need a metal frame. Just choose the size that corresponds with your mattress.
Headboards
If you'd like to dress up a simple bed frame, consider a headboard. It's a more affordable option than buying a whole bed. Headboards can be wood, metal or upholstered. They can be attached to a metal bed frame or mounted to the wall. Find out How to Make a Wooden Woven Headboard.
Mattresses
In order to get a good night's sleep, a mattress is one of the most important home purchases you can make. Select from six different sizes, ranging from twin to a California king. Read our comprehensive Mattress and Bedding Buying Guide to purchase the best mattress for your bedroom.
Nightstands, Dressers and Additional Storage
Storage is always a necessity in a bedroom, and there are several options to choose from.
Nightstands
Nightstands are typically found on each side of the bed. They can be matching or different styles, depending on your aesthetic. The optimal height of a nightstand is 24 to 28 inches, lining up with the top of the mattress. Styles can vary from a simple floating nightstand to a three-drawer chest with built-in power outlets and USB chargers.
Dressers and Chest of Drawers
For maximum storage, consider a dresser or a chest of drawers. A dresser is usually short and low with three to six drawers and can have a mirror on top. A chest of drawers is narrow and tall, taking up the least amount of room.
Armoires
An armoire is an oversized piece of wooden furniture that can serve multiple purposes: holding clothes, linens or to hide a TV or electronics.
Benches and Trunks
A quick and easy way to add storage and functionality to your bedroom is with a bench or trunk at the end of your bed. Upholstered bench tops can open up to reveal hidden storage, or a trunk can hold heavy blankets, photos, books and more.

Children's Bedroom Furniture
Children's bedrooms are a great place to inject color, fun and personality. Here are a few considerations when purchasing furniture.
Cribs
Parents preparing for their little one's arrival know the importance of having a good crib. They come in a variety of colors ranging from white and black to pink or gray. If you'd like the bed to grow with your child, consider a convertible crib that transforms from a baby crib to a toddler's bed and can even become a full-size bed.
Rockers
A rocker is also a new parent's staple. Styles range from traditional wooden rockers to a soft upholstered swivel rocker.
Loft or Bunk Beds
These space-saving beds are a great idea for kids who share a room or just need the extra square footage. A loft bed has the bed on top and space underneath for a desk or storage. Bunk beds have a bed on the top and one on the bottom. They're available in twin or full sizes.
Daybeds With Trundles
A daybed is also great for small spaces. It accommodates a twin- or full-size bed, but the frame runs lengthwise, similar to a couch. For sleepovers, add a trundle underneath that can pull out when guests stay but easily tucks out of the way when not in use.
Storage
Kids have a lot of stuff, so make sure you have a place to put it all. Baskets are great for toys; storage cubes with colorful bins can hide arts and crafts; and ledges can show off their latest books. For more ideas on organizing a child's room, watch The Weekender: Sleepless in Miami.
Other Considerations
Don't forget the items that make a house a home: the accessories.
Lighting
Lighting a room appropriately is always a good idea. In the bedroom, consider wall sconces or table lamps next to the bed, overhead lighting on a dimmer and a ceiling fan for warmer temperatures. For more information, read How to Choose the Right Lights.
Rugs
Area rugs bring color, style and warmth to a space. In order to select the right size rug for your bedroom, you'll want the rug to extend 2 feet on each side of the bed. Read more about How to Choose Area Rugs.
Mirrors
Add a mirror over a dresser or use a framed floor model to get ready in the morning.
Artwork and Décor
Bring color and personality to a room with wall art, candles, plants, framed prints and tabletop decorations.
Bedding
Nice bedding not only looks great but promotes a better night's sleep. Choose from a variety of soft, high-quality sheets, duvets, comforters, throw pillows and blankets.
