A Guide to Choosing Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is an easy, affordable way to make a big impact in any room. It's pretty simple to put up and won't damage your walls when you decide to take it down. But this isn’t your grandmother’s wallpaper. New designs are fun, eye-catching and will add personality to your home.

Why Peel-and-Stick?

Sure, there are other types of wallpaper out there, like unpasted versions where you paint adhesive on the wall or on the paper before sticking it in place. But those are best left for DIYers with some wallpaper-hanging experience. For everyone else, peel-and-stick is the easiest, most DIY-friendly method for fool-proof results. It's easy to put up and won’t damage your walls if you decide to remove it.

You can hang peel-and-stick wallpaper by yourself if you’re doing a small project like an accent wall or the inside of a bookcase. For larger projects, the process will be quicker and easier with another pair of helping hands.

The only tools you’ll need are a thick card or putty knife to get rid of air bubbles, a utility knife and a straight edge for trimming the wallpaper. Oh yeah, and inspiration. You’ll need that too, but we’ve got you covered.

Mid-Century Modern Wallpaper

Wallpaper isn’t all stripes and plaid anymore. Go with a fun print with dark colors and bold graphic lines to give your living room mid-century modern style. This look pairs well with natural wood tones and clean lines, like a vintage (or vintage-inspired) sideboard and your favorite thrift-store finds. Since this style of wallpaper is bold, use it in a small area of the room so you don’t overwhelm the space.

Floral Wallpaper

Choose wallpaper with a dainty floral pattern to give your space a whimsical, relaxed feel. A pattern with smaller flowers will make your room look larger, making it great for areas like the laundry room or a narrow hallway. Wallpaper with big, bold flowers will make a room feel cozy and more intimate and are perfect for a bedroom.

You can also use large pattern florals for small spaces like a bathroom to make a big impact. If wallpapering an entire wall feels like pattern overload, consider doing just the top half of the wall and adding beadboard or wainscotting on the lower portion.

Tropical Wallpaper

Lean into the popular jungalow trend – a mix of bohemian and modern styles that’s heavy on plants, patterns and bright colors – with tropical wallpaper. If this is out of your comfort zone, choose a wallpaper with only a few colors and a simple repeating pattern. This will make for an easy transition into the rest of your home and make choosing accessories a breeze.

Neutral Wallpaper

Neutral wallpaper can add depth and texture to an otherwise basic room. Look for wallpaper with a simple color palette that’s free from strong graphic patterns. Paint the rest of your walls and trim the same shade as the background of the wallpaper to give your bedroom or living room a tone-on-tone effect that’s both subtle and sophisticated.

Traditional Wallpaper

Channel your inner coastal grandmother and choose a wallpaper with a damask pattern to give your living room a timeless look. If this is too busy for you, you can never go wrong with classic stripes. Pair it with traditional furniture with a white or a warm wood finish. Add a touch of modern flair with brushed gold accents.
