How to Build a DIY Swamp Cooler

Screw one PVC joint elbow to one of the pipes in a way that one pipe extends a few inches beyond than the width of the cooler. Pass the elbow end through the circular hole in such a way that it faces the interior of the cooler.

The other end will turn outwards. Use tape to seal any gaps that might be present. This is the place where air will come out.

Mount one or two fans inside the cooler and direct them towards the PVC pipe. Small personal fans are suitable. Secure the cooler walls using bolts that are screwed to the walls of the cooler. Ensure that the cords of the fans can extend to an outlet that is outside the cooler.

Take a tube and connect a water pump to the end of it. Put the pump in a bucket and connect the tubing to the swamp cooler through a small hole.

Put the end of the tubing on the inside wall at the fan's side. Make small holes along its length so that the water should drip down.

Measure the fans to be fixed inside the cooler and cut a piece of wood that will fit right over them. It is suggested that you drill many small holes across its body. Put it lightly on the fans. This is where the evaporative cooling process occurs.

The wood can be exchanged with mesh or other materials that allow air to pass through, thereby enhancing the passage of air through the spaces between the slats.

Bring the pump and connect it to the power supply, then immerse it in a container with water. Allow the water to flow through the pipe and trickle on the inner surface of the walls. Put ice in the bucket to increase the cooling effect.

Last, but not least, connect the fans. Cool, moist air will start coming out of the PVC pipe. Place the pipe near an open window so that the cooled air gets into your house.

Many methods can enhance the cooling performance of a swamp cooler. For example, more fans or bigger jars may help.

Instead of wood, you can use materials such as old computer fans or pieces of ceiling tiles. Proper insulation also prevents hot air from ingressing into the house.
