Preparing the Area for Wallpaper

Red and beige floral print wallpaper in a room.

Calculate the amount of wallpaper you need by taking the square footage of the room and adding 15% as a buffer to account for miscalculations or waste. Use our Wallpaper Calculator to see how many rolls you need for your job.

  • Remove as much furniture as possible.
  • Place drop cloths on the floor around the base of the walls.
  • If you plan to paint part of the room, do it before you wallpaper.
  • Before working around electrical outlets, turn off the electricity for that room at your circuit breaker box. Remove all electrical outlet covers and switch plates.
  • Make sure all of the rolls are from the same run number or dye lot. Write down the dye lot or run number for future reference.

Basic Wallpapering Tips

  • Hang your first strip of wallpaper in an inconspicuous spot, like behind a door.
  • Cut the paper into strips a few inches higher than your wall space. You can go back and trim later.
  • If you’re using paste, cover the edges. Let it sit so the paste can soak into the paper.
  • Fold the pasted ends in onto themselves (known as booking) so the ends meet in the middle. Don’t crease the folds.
