How to Drill a Hole in Glass

If you are drilling a glass bottle, you will first need to set it correctly. Place the glass on a piece of wooden plywood and secure it with a rubber band. The rubber band will prevent the glass from shattering.

While drilling, use a clamp to hold the glass in place. This prevents movement and potential breakage. However, do not attach the clamp directly to the glass, as this could cause the glass to temper and break. Instead, use a rubber band as an intermediary between the clamp and the glass. This provides a buffer that helps distribute pressure more evenly and reduces the risk of damage. When applying the clamp, be mindful of the pressure you're using. Too much pressure can cause stress on the glass, leading to cracks or shattering.

Mark and secure the area where you want to create the hole. Make a dam to easily cut a hole and mark the space. To make a dam, take a small portion of plumber putty and roll it around in your palm. Stretch it to form a thick and long shape. Then, attach both the ends of the putty and form a circle. Place the putty in a place you want to cut a hole. This will form a dam around the surface where you want to drill a hole.

Drilling can heat the glass and lead to breakage. You need to keep the glass cool while drilling with water. Create a continuous water source with a plastic bottle. Make a small hole using a push pin. Fill the plastic bottle with water. Then hang the bottle above the glass aiming at the area where you will drill a hole.

Attach the carbide-tipped drill bit to your drilling machine. Place the drill bit on the upper surface where you aim to create a hole. Then at a slow speed, start drilling on the bottle. Drilling at slow speed will ensure only the drilling area is exposed. The entire bottle remains unharmed during drilling at a slow speed.
