why they are important.
Lime
Lime is made of natural resources such as limestone. This amendment is mainly used to reduce soil acidity. Naturally, adding lime in the lawn will make the soil less acidic and more alkaline. This will help to create a healthy environment for grass to get its nutrients and grow. Lime comes in various forms, but calcitic and dolomitic lime are the most common ones. While both types raise the soil's pH and both help to reduce the acidity problem, the dolomitic lime has an extra advantage as it also supplies magnesium, which is an essential nutrient for chlorophyll production, which is like food for the grass's green color.
Gypsum
Gypsum is different from lime because it doesn't work in soil's acidic nature. Instead, it helps to loosen up the soil, which allows the roots to go inside the soil smoothly. This helps mainly for lawns with clay-like soil because clay is somewhat tight and rigid, which makes it hard for water and roots to move through. By adding Gypsum to the lawn, the soil becomes less clumpy, allowing water to move better and roots to grow deeper and stronger.
In short, Lime and Gypsum both have different properties; it depends on the area of concern for your lawn to choose one. If your yard's soil is too acidic and needs some nutrient help, then select lime. But, if your lawn's soil is hard and compact, which is an obstacle for roots to grow, then choose Gypsum.
