Installing a Metal or Tin Ceiling

A decor ceiling can be installed different ways when working with tin or metal ceiling tiles. The two most common are using nails or an adhesive to secure the product in place. Some types of tin or metal ceilings can also be installed as a drop ceiling .

The instructions below are only a general overview of the most important steps for installing a tin or metal ceiling. Instructions may vary greatly for your project depending on the type of product you choose. Check the manufacturer’s specifications to determine precise directions, including any additional tools or materials needed that are not covered in these steps on how to put up ceiling tiles. As always, check local building codes before beginning any home upgrade and check to see if a permit is required.

Décor Ceiling Installation Instructions

Start by measuring the length and width of the room to determine the square footage. This will tell you how many metal or tin tiles you need to purchase. As you calculate, be sure to factor in a little extra product to account for mistakes or any cuts you’ll need to make to fit around obstructions such as light fixtures and ceiling fan mounts. Most pros recommend purchasing 10 to 15 percent extra.

When measuring a room, enlist a helper to hold one end of the tape measure for accuracy.

Once you’ve determined a layout for the ceiling tiles, mark what pros refer to as ‘control lines’ on the ceiling. Start by snapping a chalk line down the center of the area to be tiled. You’ll need a helper for this step. Next, measure halfway down the first control line and snap another line, bisecting it to create a right angle. Hold one tile up to one of the “corners” created at the intersection of the two control lines and use this placement to measure and snap additional chalk lines until you have a grid pattern denoting where the rest of the tiles should go.

Before you permanently attach the tiles to the ceiling, you’ll want to dry fit them to make sure everything lines up. During this step, you’ll also need to know how to cut ceiling tiles and trim them as needed to fit around any fixtures. Most products can be cut with ordinary tin snips, but check the manufacturer’s instructions to see the best technique for cutting the type you’re using. It’s also a good idea to file down any sharp edges that result from making cuts before mounting, both to protect your hands and to provide a smooth edge for a professional look.

Metal tiles can have very sharp edges. Wear work gloves to protect your hands.

Secure the tiles to the ceiling either by applying cement or using nails. The manufacturer’s instructions will tell you exactly which method(s) to use.

If using cement, apply the product to the back of tiles using a paint roller and press into place. Be sure to apply the cement with an even coat. Allow the cement to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It’s best to mount tiles in the center of the room first — using the control lines as a guide — and then work your way toward the edges of the ceiling, trimming tiles to fit accordingly.

Once you’ve made it to the ends, you may choose to apply tin or metal moulding or decorative finishing strips to cover any gaps and help create a professional look.
