Commercial refrigerators have professional-grade components that cool and maintain temperatures better than residential models. But for many units, installation is relatively simple. We’ll give you tips for installing a commercial refrigerator and help you decide if the project is right for you.

DIY Commercial Refrigerator Installation

If you’re planning to install a commercial refrigerator as a do-it-yourself project, there are several things to consider:

  • You’ll need to follow all codes that apply to the work.
  • The manufacturer’s warranty may require professional installation.
  • DIY installation of a commercial refrigerator is suitable only for small, basic plug-in units that operate on standard household current and don’t require complex electrical, drainage, installation or operation.
  • The appliance may be larger than a residential refrigerator, so make sure you have enough clearance at the doorway and along the path to the installation area.
  • Refrigerators are heavy. You’ll need a helper to move and position the appliance.

These instructions give general steps for home installation of a simple, freestanding commercial refrigerator that operates on standard household electrical current. Different appliances require different installation methods, so always follow the instructions for your appliance.

Good to Know

Installing a commercial refrigerator in a business requires following specific code requirements and regulations to maintain compliance. Leave this work to a licensed professional who’s familiar with the requirements.

Can You Install a Commercial Refrigerator In Your Home?

Before you purchase or begin installation of a commercial refrigerator, make sure you have a suitable location. For example:

  • The appliance must be on a level, hard floor.
  • There must be proper clearance at the top and all around the refrigerator.
  • You need a grounded, three-prong outlet on a dedicated circuit with a circuit breaker of the correct amperage. If you don’t have the proper outlet, hire a licensed electrician to install one.
  • The outlet must be in reach of the built-in cord. Don't use an extension cord.
  • The location must be clean and have good ventilation. There should be no heat sources nearby.
  • The location must be indoors unless the refrigerator is designed for a garage or other exterior area.

Your appliance manual has details on electrical requirements, necessary clearance and more. Make sure your home and your location is suitable.

Installing a Commercial Refrigerator

Installing a basic commercial refrigerator is a relatively simple process, but you need some knowledge of DIY projects and electrical connections.

Caution

If you’re not comfortable installing a commercial refrigerator or you’re unsure about the electrical requirements, have a professional install the appliance.

A commercial refrigerator may be heavier than a residential unit and may have more expensive or delicate components. Take these factors into consideration to protect yourself and your appliance.

Commercial Refrigerator Connection and Set Up

Reversing the Door

Some commercial refrigerator doors are reversible, allowing you to change the way a door on the unit swings when it opens. Enlist a helper for this process. Specific instructions vary by model, but typically you’ll:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator and place the food in a location to keep it chilled or frozen, as appropriate.
  2. Support the door and remove the hinges from one side of the door and appliance.
  3. Remove the mounting hole plugs on the opposite side of the door and appliance.
  4. Reorient the hinges and install them on the opposite side of the door and appliance.
  5. Install the door.
  6. Remove the door handle and install it on the opposite side of the door.
  7. Install the hinge covers and mounting hole plugs.
  8. Plug the refrigerator in and return the food once the compartment reaches the correct temperature.

Good to Know

On some units you may need to support the appliance and remove the adjustable feet to access the hinge hardware. Don’t set the refrigerator on its back, side or front.
