How to Convert Carpeted Stairs to Hardwood

After removing the carpet, dispose of the carpet pad. Use pliers and a pry bar to pull up any nails, tacks and tack strips.

If the subfloor is damaged, this is the time to replace it. 

If the subfloor isn't damaged, start by cutting any nosing off so that you have a flat profile along the front riser. This allows the new pieces to be installed smoothly. 

In order to install the hardwoods, measure the stairs to get the cut lengths together.

Use a table saw and start cutting the riser pieces to the correct size. Attach the risers with construction adhesive. Nails aren't needed because the risers don't get any pressure on them, but you can use them if you'd like. 

It's time to prep the tread caps. They have a lip on the front. Cut them to size and attach with construction adhesive. Nail the corners to ensure they won't move.

These treads come with edge moulding, which is attached using adhesive and a nail gun for a nice, clean look around the sides.

The other option is to replace the tread piece entirely with a hardwood border. If you're going to do that, measure the tread size, cut the tread and then attach it.

In this video, we're using a tread that already has a rounded front. If you prefer, you can round over a piece of wood. Attach that piece with construction adhesive and nails as well.

Stain and clear coat your stairs to give them long-lasting appeal. If there were existing hardwoods underneath the carpet, sand them before re-staining.

Use a foam brush to apply the stain, and wipe with a lint-free cloth. Once it dries, apply two coats of clear coat. Follow the instructions on dry time.
