Install a Glue-to-Wall Tub or Shower Surround

To ensure that the surround properly bonds to the wall, clean the walls and apply a primer to the backerboard. Let the walls dry.

If you're installing a shower surround, install the shower pan first. You'll want to purchase a shower pan that matches the dimensions of the shower surround. For the best fit, we recommend buying the same brand for the shower pan and the shower surround. Follow the manufacturer's directions for installation.

Using the tub/shower surround carton for a template, mark holes where the showerhead, faucet handles, or spout will protrude through the wall.

Lay the carton template on top of the panel for that wall and use a hole saw or a jigsaw to cut out the holes. Then have someone help you hold the panel up to the corresponding wall to ensure the holes are in the right places.

With your helper holding the panels in place, mark the location of their top and side lines on the wall. Make sure the panels will be level and plumb. Consult the manufacturer's directions for what tool to use if you need to cut a panel. A sharp utility knife will work in many cases, but some materials may call for a jigsaw.
