Measure
Bathroom vanities are one of the most important considerations you can make when remodeling your bathroom. It's where you'll get ready in the morning, put on your makeup, brush your teeth and store all your toiletries. So you'll want it to be the right size to meet your needs, provide adequate countertop and undercabinet space to hold your belonging and the correct height to comfortably use it. Here are the steps you'll need to get the correct dimensions for a bathroom vanity.
Step 1: Open your entry and shower doors before you measure. It's important to do this to ensure the vanity won't be too big, causing doors and drawers to bump up against one another. For toilets, you'll need to allow at least 18 inches from the center of the toilet to the cabinet edge.
Step 2: To replace an existing vanity, note where your outlets, electrical switches, mirrors and plumbing are currently located. If possible, try to keep your vanity in the same place. Changing the footprint of your bathroom will increase the plumbing costs.
Step 3: Using a tape measure, determine the width of your existing cabinet, including the countertop. If you're purchasing a vanity without a top, you'll need to add an inch in width and an inch in depth for the countertop.
Step 4: Measure the height of your existing cabinet from the base of the cabinet to the top of the countertop. Vanity heights can range from 30-36 inches high.
Step 5: Measure the depth of your existing cabinet. Bathroom vanity cabinets can range from 17-24 inches deep.
Choosing the Right Height for Your Bathroom Vanity
How Tall Is a Bathroom Vanity?
In order to find the right bathroom vanity for you and your family, you'll need to select the optimal height. There are three different heights to choose from: child, standard and comfort. We'll explain the differences and benefits of each.
Child-Height Bathroom Vanities
These vanities are 30-inches high and are meant to accommodate little ones, so that they don't need assistance reaching the sink. While these vanities are convenient in their youth, know that they'll need to be replaced in a few years as they grow. Alternatively, you can install a standard-height vanity and purchase a stool for them to use until they're taller. For more tips, check out Stylish Organizational Ideas for a Children's Bathroom.
Standard-Height Bathroom Vanities
Standard-height vanities range from 30-32 inches. Standard-height vanities are good for shorter individuals or children. Are you considering a vessel sink on top of your vanity? If so, a standard-height vanity is a good idea because these sinks are usually 5-6 inches tall, making your overall vanity height 35 to 38-inches high.
Comfort-Height Bathroom Vanities
Comfort-height vanities are 36-inches high. This is the average height of a kitchen countertop, allowing most people to comfortably get ready while putting less strain on the back.
Standard Sink and Vanity Sizes
From tiny powder rooms to large primary bathrooms, bathroom vanities and sinks come in standard sizes to fit most spaces.
Standard Sink Sizes
You'll need to decide if you're going with a single-sink vanity or a double-sink vanity. Single-sink vanities are the most popular and work well in powder rooms, small bathrooms and guest bathrooms. You can also add two single-sink vanities in a large bathroom if you want to keep things separate. The average single-sink vanity is between 30 to 48-inches wide.
Double-sink vanities work well for children sharing a bathroom or two adults sharing a primary bathroom. It gives each person their own spot to get ready and typically offers more drawer and door storage overall. These double-sink vanities are usually between 60 to 72-inches wide. If you're switching over from a single-sink vanity to a double, ensure you'll have enough room for the cabinet, as well as the plumbing.
Standard Vanity Sizes
Bathroom vanity widths can range anywhere from 12 to 84 inches. But standard cabinet widths are 24, 30, 36, 48 and 60 inches.

Additional Considerations
Don't forget the extras that'll make your bathroom look stylish and updated. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind:
- Add a new mirror or recessed medicine cabinet over your bathroom vanity.
- For flattering lighting, add sconces to either side of your mirror. If you don't have the space, add an overhead vanity light. An updated flush mount, pendant light or chandelier can make a bold statement in your updated bathroom.
- Change out your bathroom accessories such as towel bars, toilet paper holders and hooks to match your vanity cabinet hardware.
- Purchase fresh new towels and a bath mat to complete the look.
