Tips for Creating Color Flow

Want a smooth transition from bedroom to master bath? View these four popular color schemes for inspiration and follow these tips:

  • Use different shades of the same color to visually connect rooms. This works especially well with rooms not separated by doors.
  • Browse the paint chips or fan decks for Valspar® and HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams. Related colors are usually on one card.
  • Select hues with similar undertones. If you like bluish-greens for one room, look for other colors with blue undertones for an adjoining room.
  • Pull color from artwork, furnishings and fabric colors in adjoining rooms.
  • Select the colors you want for the rooms (keep it to three or four), then alternate main, secondary and accent colors between rooms.
  • Paint trim and ceilings the same white between rooms. It connects the rooms and highlights architecture.
  • If you have a piece of furniture that doesn’t match your new color scheme, consider spray painting it. It’s a quick, easy and inexpensive way to transform a headboard, dresser or nightstand.

Put It in Neutral

A light taupe bedroom with branch wallpaper and a taupe bathroom with sage green walls and cabinets.

For the first design, we chose a neutral palette where light tones are layered with sage accents. Branch-inspired wallpaper frames the bed. This color scheme is ideal for those looking for a calm and serene bedroom.

In the bathroom, we used the same neutral palette but went a shade darker with the wall color using Valspar® Modest Silver. Then we ran a soft green stripe through the center of the bathroom and painted the shelving units to match. Look closely and you’ll see the branch wallpaper lines the back of the tower units, tying the bedroom and bathroom together in a subtle way.

Pretty in Pink

A soft pink bedroom and a matching bathroom with striped wallpaper and pink cabinets.

For those seeking a more feminine style, look no further than this next bedroom.

This soft peachy pink color called Morning Glow looks great with the oatmeal and white accessories in the room. On the bottom of the wall, a matching vertical-striped wallpaper is a nice addition.

The soft palette continues into the bathroom. We used Valspar® Swiss Coffee on the walls and painted the shelving and vanities in the same Morning Glow as the bedroom. Wallpaper in a horizontal stripe pulls it all together.

Moody Blues

A deep blue-painted bedroom with a lighter blue bathroom and butterfly wallpaper behind each vanity.

Deep, dramatic shades are trending right now. These work well in bedrooms to set the tone for a good night’s sleep.

This bold peacock color by Valspar® is called Azure Jazz. Navy curtains and accessories play up the moody vibe, while a splash of fuchsia in the pillows provides a pop of color.

The color continues in the bathroom where we painted the vanities and shelving Valspar® Brookside. A wide stripe of butterfly wallpaper behind each vanity makes a statement and perfectly complements the jewel-toned space.

Lovely Lavender

Paintable wallpaper in lavender lines the bedroom walls and a gray and lavender bathroom matches.

For the last few years, gray has been popular in both interiors and exteriors. If you have a gray bedroom and bath but want an update, try Valspar® Lilac Lace. Lavender shades are having a moment and look great with gray tones. If you look closely, we used this shade on paintable wallpaper to give the room some added texture.

Heading into the bathroom, we painted the top half Prudence and the bottom half in the same Lilac Lace. Then we ran a wide band of geometric wallpaper through the middle.
