Painting textured surfaces like exterior stucco, brick and concrete requires special tools. You may not be able to rely on the paint supplies that you have out in the garage. Here's a chart to help you figure out what you need and create a shopping list.

Painting Brick

Painting brick is popular, but it can be more complicated than other textured surfaces. For example, unlike exterior stucco, brick will have mortar that you may need to repair before painting. The bricks may also have a rougher surface than some other exteriors. If you’re painting a brick house, using a suitable brick exterior paint will give you the best results. Follow these steps for a great paint job.

Painting Masonry

Painting masonry, such as concrete or limestone, is relatively simple. In order to have a durable, smooth finish, prep work will be the most important part of this job. Make sure you’re using the right type of paint. For example, if you’re painting an exterior masonry wall, choose a masonry exterior paint.

When you’re painting stucco, you’ll typically be painting an exterior surface. If your stucco is brand new and unpainted, you need to wait at least one month before painting it. This allows it to cure completely. When the surface is ready, apply a suitable exterior paint for stucco surfaces.
