Refinishing or Replacing?
Before you run out to Lowe's to get your bathtub refinishing materials, make sure that refinishing is the best option. If your tub has small spiderweb cracks or some surface rust or just looks old and dingy, refinishing it is a great option.
However, deeper cracks, holes or rusty areas that seem the only grow with time indicate that you'll need to replace the entire tub. The cost of refinishing is certainly cheaper than replacement, but trying to cover structural cracks or holes will only delay the inevitable.
How to Refinish a Bathtub
Now let's get into how to refinish a bathtub. The time for refinishing a standard-sized bathtub typically takes three to five hours. In most cases, the tub will be ready to use within 24 hours. Be sure to read the instructions on your refinishing kit carefully, as they may differ from these general steps. You should also check the instructions on any materials you use, such as caulk remover or bleach.
Once you've gotten all of your tools and materials in place, you're ready to begin refinishing your bathtub. Since you'll be working with some strong chemicals, be sure to use all safety protection (chemical protection gloves, eye protection, respirator). Also, because some of the chemicals you're using give off fumes, you'll want to provide ventilation during the project by using your bathroom's exhaust fan and opening a window. This is especially important if you're working on a fiberglass surface.
