Why Is My Skylight Leaking?

Skylights are a great architectural design element that can let natural light into an otherwise dark room. Because they penetrate the roof’s surface, skylights can sometimes leak. Worn weatherstripping, holes around the flashing and older skylights that have started to fail are all common causes of leaks. If you notice a leak from your skylight, the first thing you need to do is identify where the water is coming from.

Rule Out Condensation

One of the most common reasons for water dripping from your skylight has nothing to do with a leak. Instead, condensation might be causing the problem. If the room is humid — for example, a bathroom or a laundry room — the warm air will rise to meet a cold skylight, producing condensation. To get rid of condensation on the inside of the skylight, improve the ventilation in a room with a portable fan, ceiling fan or dehumidifier. You can also apply anti-fogging products.

How to Fix Your Leaking Skylight

Once you’ve ruled out condensation as the culprit, you’ll need to inspect the skylight to see where the leak is coming from.

Caution

Inspecting your skylight requires you to climb a ladder and potentially get on your roof. Always take proper precautions to prevent slips and falls. Use protective equipment, such as fall-prevention gear. Always hire a professional if the roof pitch is more than 35 degrees or if you’re uncomfortable working on the roof.

When to Replace Your Skylights

Sometimes, fixing your existing skylights might not be possible and you’ll need to replace them with new ones. This can happen if there are cracks on your skylights from hail damage or regular wear. You should replace skylights that are more than 20 years old to reduce heat transfer. Finally, if you’re replacing your roof, you should consider updating your skylights with newer models. Skylight installation is easier and more efficient if you complete it at the same time as the new roof installation.
