How to Replace a Shower Faucet

These are the general instructions for replacing a faucet in the shower. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific product and be sure to follow all building and plumbing codes for your area. If you’re unsure or not confident doing this project yourself, call a professional plumber.

Need to Know

The rough-in valve that’s behind the wall will need to work with the new faucet. If your new faucet doesn’t work with the rough-in valve, you’ll need to replace it. Some shower faucets come with the new valve included, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing a separate one. You can replace the faucet only without changing the plumbing behind the wall, but options may be limited where style is concerned.

Good to Know
Many shower faucets come with a matching shower head, and in some cases a matching tub spout for tub/shower combinations. This allows you to update all the fixtures at once with a cohesive look.
