Using a Router

In woodworking, routers are tools that create detailed edges, adding a professional look to your project. You can also use a router to create mortises for joints. Whether you have a fixed router or a plunge router, use these tips to get started.

Router Tools and Techniques

Routers are wood tools that spin a bit to shape or carve wood. You can cut different shapes depending on the profile or shape of the bit you install on the router. Tools for routing are typically fixed routers or plunge routers:

  • Fixed routers or fixed-base routers operate with the bit at a preset height, cutting along the edge of a workpiece. You set the height to cut at your desired depth and the router maintains this depth as you cut.
  • Plunge routers have a spring-loaded feature that lets you move the housing and cutting bit up or down. This allows you to start routing either along the edge or the interior of a workpiece. To use a plunge router you start the tool and then lower the bit onto the wood.

Some routers can work as either fixed or plunge routers. Fixed routers and plunge routers cut similarly but a plunge router requires a bit more control to keep the spring-loaded tool cutting accurately.  Here are some general steps for using a router. Always follow the manufacturer instructions from your router and router bit for use, maintenance and safety procedures. Be sure to make a few test cuts on scrap lumber before working on your final project.

Caution

Disconnect the router from the power source before making adjustments, installing accessories and bits or storing the tool.
