Wine Refrigerator Installation
The specifics for a wine cooler installation will depend on the model you purchase. Each manufacturer has their own recommendations for how to install a wine cooler correctly and you will ultimately refer to those. However, here are a few important points to think about as you plan for your project.
- Locate your wine cooler in a convenient spot where you can easily access beverages. This is especially important if you frequently entertain guests.
- If you don’t have an outlet nearby, you may need to have an electrician install one. See How to Install and Replace Electrical Outlets for more details.
- Make sure your cooler is installed in an area where it will have the appropriate amount of ventilation as outlined in your instruction manual, so it won’t overheat or malfunction. Just as with a full-sized refrigerator, the manufacturer may recommend a certain amount of clearance on the back and the sides of the machine.
- Open the door and let your machine air out for a day or so before plugging it in for the first time. This will get rid of any unpleasant chemical smells from the factory.
- Don’t overlook any safety requirements recommended by the manufacturer.
How to Clean a Wine Chiller
Cleaning your wine color regularly will keep it mold and odor free. Here are a few tips.
- Before cleaning, turn your machine off, place any bottles inside in a spare refrigerator if you have one, and leave the door open for a while. Getting rid of some of the cold air inside will prevent condensation and make it easier to dry the wine cooler interior when you’re finished.
- Only use cleaning solutions specifically recommended by your machine’s manual. Harsh chemicals can damage the interior surface.
- Only use non-abrasive rags and sponges to wipe down your machine to prevent scratches, especially on see-through glass.
- For a natural cleaning alternative, wipe the inside with a soft cloth and a solution of white vinegar diluted in water. Be sure to rinse the cloth completely, wipe the interior surface again with pure water several times and dry it thoroughly to remove the vinegar smell.
- Clean your machine after any spills or leaks, and at least once or twice a year as part of regular maintenance.
Wine Chiller Maintenance
Here are a few things you should do to keep you wine cooler in good working order.
- Pull your machine out from the wall and wipe the dust from the condenser at least once per year. Be sure to unplug your cooler before moving it.
- Never sit heavy objects or anything wide enough to interfere with proper ventilation on top of your wine chiller.
- Always replace the activated carbon air filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Make sure to prevent the outer surface of your cooler from encountering moisture or excess sunlight.
- If you need to store your wine chiller, unplug it, clean the inside and let it air dry for at least 24 hours first.
