Baseboards and casing are often given the last thought when designing a home. They do more than mask the transition between the floor and the wall. They can also add a decorative detail to your room. Explore baseboard and casing ideas to elevate your home décor.

Baseboard and Door Casing Ideas

The joint between the floor and wall is exposed to wear and tear. A baseboard helps to cover and protect this area and floor from damage. Here are a few ideas for baseboard and door casing in your home.

Rustic Baseboard

Rustic baseboards create a warm and inviting feel in the room. Opt for wooden textures for farmhouse-styled interiors. Use semi-transparent stain to enhance the wooden look. You can also install colonial-styled molding on the corners.

You can also pair them with door and window casings. A casing with rope motifs will add to the beauty of the baseboard. Together, they can highlight other home décor elements like wooden floors and stone fireplaces.

Make A Chair Rail Trim

Installing a chair rail trim around the room is an easy baseboard trim idea. The trim acts as a protective layer between the wall and your furniture.

It also creates a visual break between the walls. The interior design defines the walls' painting and the chair rail trim. Painting the lower wall darker goes well with a classic look. For a modern look, always match the chair rail with the baseboard.

Color Contrast the Baseboards

Baseboards don’t have to be the same color as your wall. You can create interesting color contrasts between them. Try different color combinations to match the decor theme of your home.

If you wish to paint them, opt for unfinished wood baseboards. The unfinished surface can be sanded to get a smooth surface. You can also go with primed baseboards to save time. Paint the walls and install the baseboard of your choice.

Include Battens with Baseboards

Baseboards can give the room a cottage-style makeover. You can make your own DIY wainscotting by installing battens between two levels of flat baseboard.

You can paint this installation white and pair it with an interesting wallpaper above. If you prefer a traditional look, give them a natural stain.

Notched Baseboard

Notched baseboards can give a stylish touch to your interiors. Their carvings make them stand out. They make a great addition to living rooms, hallways and bedrooms. You can select from simple carvings to ornamental ones.

Good to Know

Baseboards add a finishing touch to your home and help hide any irregularities between the floor and the wall.

Minimal Casing

A minimal casing is one of the best additions to a modern home. Plain casing purposely lacks any decoration to allow for a minimal look. Paint them the same color as your walls to make the room appear larger. Opt for sleek casings to enhance the minimal look.

Tip

Plain baseboards can also be used as a crown molding.

MDF Baseboard

You can create picture rail wall moldings using MDF baseboards. It is an easier and mess-free alternative to plaster moldings. MDF baseboards are affordable and can be easily cut in the required dimensions.

You can display your photos, artifacts or painting collection within these. If you want an elegant yet simple look, paint the picture rails in contrasting color to your wall.

Plate Rail Trim

A plate rail trim was historically used to display decorative plates. In modern homes, it can be used for storage as well as display. A plate rail trim is recommended for rooms with high ceilings. You can also install them in your kitchen.

Corner Guards with Baseboard

Give your doors a decorative touch with corner guards. Match them with your door casing using a wood stain or paint. They are available in various wood species, including pine, poplar, maple, birch and red oak.

Use Baseboard as Art

There is no one rule when it comes to baseboards and trims. Get creative with their placement and create an artistic wall. Install them in a crisscrossing manner to create a geometric look. You can paint it all in one color or choose bold colors for certain areas. This can be a great way to personalize your room.

Enhance Your Interiors with Baseboards

Baseboards and casings are available in different colors and materials. You can easily find several options that match your home decor. Wooden baseboards can add a natural charm to any room. On the other hand, MDF baseboards are an affordable and durable option.
