The Best Spots in Your House for Fake Plants

Keeping your house plants alive can feel like a never-ending battle. From choosing the right location to the constant watering — it can be tricky. But knowing when and where to layer in fake plants can easily give your home the airy, relaxed feel you've always wanted.

Rooms with Unrealistic Lighting Conditions

A lack of natural light can make it tough for plants to thrive. Instead of constantly buying new plants in your quest for one that will survive, try out a fake plant. This way you’ll be able to get exactly the variety of plant you want despite the lighting conditions in the space. Just because a room isn’t flooded with natural light doesn’t mean you can’t have the indoor tree you’ve always wanted.

This holds true for your outdoor spaces too. If your east facing front porch scorches all your plants, an artificial outdoor plant will save you from constantly buying replacements.

Tip

Put the base of your artificial tree in a large planter or basket. Add moss or decorative rocks around the top for an ultra-realistic look.

Hard to Reach Places

Adding indoor plants to the top of your bookshelf or hanging from the ceiling is a great way to make your home feel warm and welcoming. It’s also likely that you’ll put off watering these plants since they’re not within arm’s reach. Layer fake plants with live low-maintenance houseplants that are almost impossible to kill, like a snake plant or aloe, for the most realistic look.

Tip

Choose artificial varieties with small leaves so you won’t see any plastic veins when you look up at them.

High-Traffic Areas

Other spaces in your house that are perfect for artificial plants are the high-traffic areas, like your entryway. Any live plants you put near your front door or on your console table are inevitably going to get bumped as you come and go throughout the day. This can damage the leaves and hinder any new growth from happening. Instead of stressing about a plant getting knocked over, just replace it with a new artificial decorative plant. Now you’ll have one less thing to worry about as you try to get out the door on time.

Easily Forgotten Areas

Having a spare bedroom is great when you have company staying over, but the room is easy to ignore between visitors. By the time you realize you need to water the indoor plants, it may be too late. Plants are not as easily refreshed as the sheets and pillowcases, so it’s best to go artificial here. The only maintenance these plants require is a quick dusting before your next guests arrive.

Frequently Used Surfaces

Regularly having friends over for things like game night or to watch movies is a lot of fun. But it means the space on your coffee table is always in high demand. Moving your tabletop décor out of the way is easy enough, but you might run into problems if you have a potted plant that lives on your coffee table. Constantly changing a plant's environment, even just for a few hours at a time, can be detrimental to the health of your plant. Try out a faux succulent instead since many look so realistic no one will ever be able to tell it’s artificial.

Where You Need a Nontoxic Houseplant

Adding greenery to your kid’s bedroom or play areas can brighten up the space and give off a relaxed, laid-back vibe. However, you may not love the idea of leaving them with a pot full of dirt, or a potentially hazardous plant, at their disposal. Grab a few fake plants to get the look you want without the worry.

Going artificial ensures all your plants are safe for cats and dogs, too. No more researching every plant before you bring it home since all fake plants are pet-friendly plants. The plastic leaves and faux braches are no match for your inquisitve pets.

When You Really Want a Hard to Care for Plant

Bedroom with blue walls, wood desk and a potted lemon tree.

Sometimes the plant you want is just out of your realm of expertise. For some of us, having a miniature lemon tree in our bedroom isn’t the best idea. This is a time to be honest with yourself about how green your thumb really is. If you have a busy schedule or are new to gardening, then investing in plants that are hard to care for can be a gamble. Real plants and artificial ones can be around the same price, but only one is guaranteed to survive. Try a fun miniature tree to make your room feel fun and whimsical.
