Advantages of a Double Oven
Double ovens
are basically a combination of 2 ovens in 1 appliance. This ergonomic design takes up much less space
than having 2 separate ovens. The best feature of a double oven is that you can simultaneously
cook 2 dishes at different temperatures. If you have a large family or
entertain guests often, a double oven will make your cooking more efficient. If
you have decided to get one, check out these double oven placement ideas.
Placement for Double Ovens
A double oven is composed
of two oven compartments combined into a single unit. Double ovens can be
wall-mounted or freestanding as per your requirements.
Wall Cavity
Your oven can be placed inside a wall. At a suitable location, you can have a cavity made in the wall of your choice. The double oven will come in a pre-built frame which can be fit into a brick or plastered wall. Most double ovens come in standard sizes (27” and 30”) but the height varies so choose your oven before you break the wall.
Cabinetry
You can fit your double oven right into your kitchen cabinets. The depth of the oven should match the depth of the cabinets so that everything is neatly aligned. You can place your double oven between the cabinets or on the corners based on your kitchen layout. Let the height of the cabinets line up with the top of the oven. Design the width of the overhead cabinets to match the oven or conceal the top with matching ply.
Stack Appliances
Use an entire column to stack all your appliances. A slide-in double oven would be best for this placement idea. You can put a microwave above your double oven and add a warming drawer below. Make sure that all the appliances have the same width and finish so it looks cohesive. The appliances don’t need to have the same depth, as long as the supporting frames are perfectly fitted. Use the remaining space in that column to store baking trays.
Practical placement
You can place an oven anywhere as long as it's practical. Check out these constructive placement ideas for double ovens.
Stay in the Cooking Zone
Most of the movement in the kitchen happens between 3 spots - the oven, the sink and the refrigerator. Place your double oven in an area where it is just a few steps away from your sink and fridge. This is especially applicable if you have a large kitchen so you’re not wasting time running around the room.
Close Countertop
Double ovens should be close to a countertop so you can easily put down hot dishes. Place it adjacent or perpendicular to a countertop. If your double oven is not near a cabinet, make sure it's near a kitchen island. You don't want to have to move too far holding hot items.
Close Cooking Range
It’s helpful to have the oven near the stove for easy transferability. While most double ovens are stacked on top of each other, you can get adjacent ovens which will fit below a cooking range. Alternatively you can place the oven beside a cooking range too. Keep a little bit of counter space between the two to prevent overheating.
Near the Fridge
Refrigerators have a large depth, much like double ovens, so they will fit well next to each other. Most modern ovens and refrigerators are well insulated ensuring optimal performance without temperature transfer. Just be sure to leave a few inches for the doors to open comfortably.
Backed into a Corner
You wouldn’t normally think of placing an oven at an angle. But a large appliance such a double oven fitted at a 45 degrees angle will create visual interest. You will need customized cabinets to fit a double oven into a corner.
Creative Placement
You don’t have to be
restricted to the traditional ways that things are done. Here are some unusual placement
ideas for double ovens.
Under Elevated Cabinets
All counters don't have to be the same height in a kitchen. You can use an elevated base cabinet or a mid-height cabinet to accommodate a double oven. Your ovens will still be at a reasonable height since these cabinets are taller than regular counters. This unique placement can be the statement feature of your kitchen.
Freestanding Oven Ranges
You’re accustomed to having the oven under the stove. You don't have to compromise with a double oven. There are some designer cooking ranges paired with double ovens. They come in both gas and electric options. Choose a freestanding double oven range in a statement in color and it will be the center of attraction in your kitchen.
Kitchen Island
You can place a double oven under your kitchen island or even under your countertops. It looks unique and saves space. Bear in mind that you will be bending a whole lot to use your double oven, so avoid this if you have mobility issues.
What to Avoid
Here are some double oven
placement ideas that will not work very well.
- Stay away from tight corners. They appear to save space but will probably clash with adjacent drawers and cabinets. You don't want to have access restricted in a high-heat area.
- Don't place your oven above eye level. You would have to awkwardly reach overhead to pull out our dishes. It increases the risk of dropping things.
- Place your double oven near the sink but not right next to it. Keep a few feet distance to avoid the water splashing from the sink onto the oven. It could cause electrical hazards or steaming.
- A double oven needs ventilation. Avoid placing it in confined spaces such as a walk-in pantry where there is less ventilation.
