Busy parents, make the most of spring and summer with some family-friendly DIYs. Even little kids benefit from pitching in on household chores and projects, learning valuable skills and working with their own pint-sized tools. How many items on this list can you complete?

Gardening With Kids

Two little girls planting flowers in a garden.

  • Use a sprinkler to water the grass. Be sure to run through it a few times too.
  • Set a timer and see how many weeds you can pull in five minutes.
  • Take a trip to Lowe’s Garden Center and pick up garden supplies, veggies and flowers. Don’t forget to bring Fido and tell us you stopped by using #DogsofLowes.
  • Look for helpful bugs, like ladybugs, in the garden.
  • Help your kids plant an easy-to-grow direct-sow seed like cucumber or zucchini. These plants are hearty and gratifying to watch grow.
  • Make garden markers using round, flat stones. Have kids paint the fruit, flower or vegetable on it to place near a row of seeds or seedlings.

Tip
Download and print a copy of this Lowe’s Blue Bucket List today. Use the checkboxes to keep track of all the fun activities you do with your family this summer. Get started this weekend and be sure to come to Lowe’s if you need any additional supplies. We’re happy to help.

Kid-Friendly DIY Projects

  • Put together a kid-sized tool kit. Miniature versions of grown-up tools make it easier for kids to help with projects around the house.
  • Build a fort in the backyard. If space is an issue, make it a mini fort for a stuffed animal instead.
  • Build a bird house. Then keep track of how many different birds you see in the backyard.
  • Sign up for a DIY-U by Lowe’s kids class to take together.
  • Use a kit to build your own toys or outdoor games. Cornhole is fun for all ages.

Outdoor Cleanup With Kids

  • Let kids help with the raking. A smaller version of the same rake you’re using makes it feel more fun.
  • Get ready for a beach day by cleaning out sand toys from last year. Fill a bucket with soapy water and another with clean water for rinsing.
  • Let your child help wash the car. Kids can’t resist all the suds and big fluffy sponges.
  • Help your child use a broom to sweep off the driveway or patio steps.

Just-for-Fun Outdoor Activities

  • Make and then fly your own kite. Experiment with different details, like the tail, to see if you can make it fly higher.
  • Play games like tag, hide-and-seek, I spy and more. They’re so much better outside.
  • Grill your meal outside and have a picnic on your patio furniture or even on a picnic blanket. Food tastes better when you’re outside. For dessert, roast some marshmallows for s’mores.
  • Have a dance party, decorate your porch or patio with string lights, and play your kid’s favorite tunes. You’ll be rocking until bedtime.
  • Come up with a scavenger hunt of things kids can find outside. Put the prize at the end in your Lowe’s Blue Bucket for safekeeping.
  • Watch a movie outdoors. Bring a whole picnic setup and blankets. Don’t forget your outdoor pillows and plenty of snacks.
