Whether it's a housewarming party or a dinner party, it’s a always a good idea to give a small gift to the host. The best hostess gifts are part store-bought, part homemade, but ultimately, it's the thought that counts. Here are six gift ideas any host or new homeowner will be thrilled to receive.

Garden Shears and a Pack of Seeds

If your host or hostess is an avid gardener or is trying gardening for the first time, gift them with a new pair of garden shears and a pack of in-season seeds. Check the back of the seed package to see when the ideal planting time is for your location. Most seed packs have a color-coded map on the back that makes it easy to find out this information. Grab a piece of twine or ribbon and wrap it around the sheers and the seeds, finishing with a neat bow on top. You’ll get two green thumbs up for this gift.

Homemade Cookies on a Giftable Tray

No one can resist a batch of homemade cookies, especially when they come on a pretty tray your host can re-use. If you’ve been to your hosts’ house before, keep their décor style and color scheme in mind when selecting a tray. If you’ve never been to their home or if they just moved in, choose a neutral tray like wood or wicker that will work with any décor. Not up for baking? Grab a dozen cookies from your local bakery, remove them from the packaging and put them on the tray.

Kitchen Towels Wrapped Around a Loaf of Fresh Baked Bread

You can never have too many kitchen towels. Assume the same for your hosts. Pick up a new kitchen towel for them and wrap it around a loaf of fresh-baked bread. Whether you make the bread or buy it, it’s all about the presentation here. Place the loaf of bread in the middle of the kitchen towel (printed side down) and lay the two diagonal corners of the towel over the bread. Then, take the other two corners and tie them in a simple knot, securing the loaf and the loose ends of the towel inside. Don’t pull the knot too tight. You don’t want to damage the towel or the bread. Top it off with a handwritten tag and you’re ready to go.

A Board Game and a Snack to Share

A great housewarming gift idea for couples and new homeowners is a puzzle or board game everyone can play and a snack to share, like a pretty tin of popcorn or a hot chocolate kit. They can play the game during the party or break it open later on a rainy afternoon. Playing the game during the party can take the stress out of making small talk and give guests that may not know each other a way to connect.

The Ingredients for a Charcuterie Board

A charcuterie board is the star of any housewarming party but it can seem like a lot of work to make, especially for newbies. Help your host out by giving them the starters for a charcuterie: a wood cutting board and a block of your favorite cheese so they can make one later. If you want to go the extra mile, bring enough ingredients for an instant charcuterie. Add a jar of olives, a sleeve of crackers, and a package of pepperoni. Set the contents on top of the cutting board and cover everything with clear cling wrap. Tie a ribbon around the sealed package and head to the party.

Houseplant and a Small Watering Can

Go to your local Lowe’s garden section and grab an easy-to-grow indoor plant, like a pothos or snake plant, in a ceramic pot and pair it with a small watering can. New homeowners and renters alike will love adding greenery to their space. Choose a watering can or small mister with a modern shape in a neutral color like white or gold so it will double as décor. The plant will help purify the air in their new space and the watering can will ensure the plant survives.
