Here are some creative options for entertaining guests by the pool.

1. Poolside Grilling Party

Nothing elevates a pool party like tasty grilled foods. Hot dogs, hamburgers and steaks are always classic cookout staples, but many grills these days can also accommodate an elevated culinary experience. Flat top grills allow you to go beyond traditional grilling and serve brunch and breakfast items like omelets and pancakes. And if you prefer a more carefree grilling experience that allows you to spend more time mingling with guests, look into a pellet grill that automatically feeds the flame to hold a steady cooking temperature, so you don’t have to watch the grill as closely. For those wanting to serve delicious slow-cooked meats to guests, a pellet smoker provides the same operational ease.

If you cook outside a lot and have the space, consider investing in an outdoor kitchen. There are lots of prefabricated options to choose from, and if you have the skills to custom build one, check out 9 Steps to Plan and Build Your Dream Outdoor Kitchen to get started.

If you prefer a style of entertaining that involves less planning and prep work, you can organize a fun social event that only involves snacks and beverages. An outdoor bar cart makes the perfect space for serving your favorite light refreshments, plus it also doubles as an outdoor end table to set your drinks and reading materials on when you’re enjoying some patio time alone.

3. Pool Games Tournament

Swimming is certainly a fun and relaxing activity on its own; however, the pool is also a great location for friendly team sports, like pool volleyball, basketball or diving games. You can host a designated pool game day or incorporate these fun sports into another party theme. To learn more about your game options, check out our Pool Toys and Accessories Buying Guide

4. Starlight Entertainment

Although it’s relaxing to soak up the sun by the pool during the day, a night of swimming and entertaining is a great way to make the most of the warmer months. To help create the perfect “campfire” ambiance, consider adding a fire pit to your patio so you and your guests can gather around it to chat and roast marshmallows. Also, when those cool evening breezes start at the end of the season, a fire pit will keep you warm when the sun goes down. Another great entertaining idea is a movie night under the stars. An outdoor projector screen or an outdoor TV provides the perfect entertainment center. For more ideas, see Transform Your Patio Into an Outdoor Oasis.

Tip

If you live in a mosquito-prone area, invest in pest control options like citronella candles, tiki torches and bug zappers to ensure your time spent outdoors is safe and pest free.

5. Graduation Party

A college or high school graduation party is a thoughtful way to honor your favorite student’s achievements, but renting an event space can be expensive. Plus, you’re often required to commit to a date far in advance, which can make planning a challenge. Hosting a graduation party by the pool is a unique alternative that allows you the flexibility and customization needed to make your graduate feel appreciated.

6. Christmas in July

A Christmas in July party is a fun, light-hearted event that helps keep the holiday spirit alive in the heat of summer. And what better way to host one than with a poolside barbeque. You and your guests can enjoy pool activities during the day, then at night, everyone can gather around a cozy fire pit to share Christmas memories or exchange gifts.

Pool Party Decorations and Furniture

No matter what kind of pool party you’re planning, you’ll need the right décor to stage the area. Start by selecting the outdoor lighting, including outdoor string lights and novelty lights to set the right ambiance. If your patio is looking a little barren, work in plants, planters, garden statues and other outdoor décor items to help create that “outdoor living room” feel.

You’ll also need comfy patio furniture, like outdoor sofas, coffee tables, chaise lounges and outdoor dining tables so you and your guests have a place to relax, engage in conversation or share a meal. A patio umbrella will also provide a nice shady spot for that time of the day when the sun’s rays are most brutal. For more suggestions, check out our Patio Furniture Buying Guide.
