A yucca-like live succulent plant, Hesperaloe parviflora (aka red yucca) puts on a delicious feast of color for dry gardens, with waxy tubular flowers that are coral-red on the outside and yellow inside — reminiscent in shape and color of aloe flowers. The long, narrow, arching blue-green leaves have deep grooves and white fibers along the edges. That grass-like evergreen foliage may blush slightly purple or reddish-bronze during chilly temperatures. Beginning in summer, clusters of flowers are borne on red stalks that go all the way up to 5-6' high. Use red yucca in desert landscapes, rock gardens or perennial gardens or on rocky slopes or hillsides. A fine candidate for large pots too on a sunny patio or porch. Heat-loving as well as drought tolerant and tolerant of cold down to zero F when established, this evergreen perennial succulent is native to the Chihuahuan Desert of west Texas into northeastern Mexico. Grows and flowers best in full sun. Adaptable to various soils but thrives in poor soils. While drought tolerant it appreciates occasional irrigation in summer to encourage flowering. For best performance, cut back every year in spring after the last hard frost of season.
