Epiphyllums, or "epis," are epiphytic cacti often known as orchid cacti because of their incredible, vibrant flowers. These succulent plants are native to jungles from Mexico to South America, growing on other plants and getting moisture and nutrients from the air and rain. Along with the extraordinary, deeply colorful flowers, they produce long, flat, leafless, notched stems that will cascade or arch wonderfully from a basket or dish garden. You will receive a 6-inch hanging basket of fully rooted Epiphyllum. When you repot, be sure to use a rich potting soil amended with some small bark or pumice to increase drainage. Consider hanging several to create lush, dare we say jungle- or forest-like, vertical dimension on your patio, porch, or atrium. Epiphyllums are beloved in part because they produce showy large flowers that typically range from 4 to 8 inches across. Virtually any part of the flower, from the stigma and stamen to the petals, could be a star worthy of its own attention. These tropical or semitropical forest-dwelling cacti are different from lots of other cacti in that they thrive in filtered light and humid conditions. Outside you could try hanging your new basket under a tree. A few hours of cool morning sun does an epiphyllum good, followed by dappled light to shade the rest of the day.
