Baldwin pears are semi-hard, sweet pears great for canning or desserts. The pears are medium-sized and yellow and ripen in early fall. It is a hybrid between Pyrus communis and Pyrus pyrifolia. They are moderately blight and spot resistant, and the tree is low chill for the South. The Baldwin requires 150 chill hours. Flordahome, Hood, Pineapple or Orient make good pollinators for Baldwin. They grow best in moist soils with at least partial sunlight, and can reach a height between 15-20 feet and a width of 12-15 feet. The showy flowers and manageable height of common pear makes it a favorable ornamental landscape tree. Some find the aromatic flowers and sweet edible fruits to be an additional plus. Baldwin pear is hardy in USDA Plant zones 5-9. It is shipped in a #5 pot with a minimum height of 24 inches.
