The Kieffer pear tree is a well-known American pear variety and the ideal pear for almost anywhere in the country. Kieffer pears are large, hard pears that are great for cooking or for canning. They are greenish-yellow with a red blush and are coarse, crisp, and juicy. The pears ripen in mid fall. The tree requires 350 chill hours and is hardy in Zones 4-9. It can self-pollinate but for larger crops of fruit, pollinate with the Orient Pear. Kieffer has a legendary reputation for resistance to fireblight which is very important if you live in a region with damp and humid springs. Plant the Kieffer Pear in a sunny location in ordinary well-drained garden soil. It will begin bearing in just a few years, and you will soon be picking bushels of fruit. The tree is shipped in a #5 pot with a minimum tree height of 24 inches.
