No other evergreen can beat Thuja Green Giant for creating a colorful, fast-growing, privacy fence in your landscape. This award-winning introduction from the U.S. National Arboretum is regarded as the most distinguished landscaping tree in America, and it's our #1 best-selling privacy tree. The Thuja Green Giant is a large and dense, pyramidal-shaped evergreen. The Green Giant is a fast-growing arborvitae hybrid cultivar (T. plicata x T. standishii) that is often recommended as a disease-free substitute for cypress, particularly in the southeastern U.S. Trees may grow to a height of 30-50 feet with a spread of 15-20 feet. In the proper environment, trees can add up to 3-4 feet of growth per year. The foliage is rich green in the summer and darkens or bronzes slightly in the winter but does not yellow. The tree works nicely as a specimen tree or can be planted with others to create a tall hedge or border. With no serious insect or disease problems it is considered low maintenance, and no pruning required, unless grown as a hedge. Adaptable to a variety of soil conditions, Thuja can handle both sandy and heavy clay garden soils. They thrive in both acidic or alkaline soils. They can be sensitive to salt, so they are not recommended for planting near busy roads. It is hardy in Zones 5-8 and is shipped in a #1 pot with an average height between 1-2 feet.
