Insulation & Accessories

Reap the Benefits of Insulating Crawlspaces and Other Areas of Your Home

Insulation performs several important functions in your home. Whether you’re thinking about insulating crawlspaces, insulating basement walls or adding roof insulation, keep the following benefits in mind.

  • Increased Energy Efficiency: Insulation can stop or prevent air leaks and help to keep a home comfortable all year. Avoid unnecessary energy loss with blown-in insulation, roll insulation, spray foam insulation or fiberglass insulation.
  • Reduced Heating and Cooling Costs: Properly sealing a home or office can keep hot or cold air where you want it, lowering utility bills.
  • Improved Sound Barrier: Insulation can help ensure a peaceful environment by blocking noise. Take care to choose an insulation type, such as fiberglass insulation, that’ll muffle or absorb loud sounds.
  • Prevention of Structural Damage From Moisture: Even everyday activities can release moisture and vapor into the air and threaten a home’s structural integrity. The right insulation can combat excessive moisture and keep mold and mildew growth at bay.

Save Energy With the Right Insulation

It’s difficult to maintain a comfortable interior without proper insulation. Prepare for your next resealing or installation project by shopping for quality installation products and accessories — including foam board, insulated panels, plastic sheeting, insulation board, spray-in insulation, urethane foam and more.

At Lowe’s, we carry a variety of batt insulation R-values, so you can choose the thickness of your insulation. You’ll find everything from R-19 to R-30 batt insulation, so you can tailor your insulation to the needs of your space.

Looking to insulate your space with polyurethane foam? We’ve got it, along with polycarbonate sheets and corrugated plastic sheets. Check out our selection of products today.

Seal Every Space

Every property has areas that need additional insulation, house wrap or insulation supports. You can improve the energy efficiency of your property by tending to these commonly underinsulated areas.

  • Attics: Add attic insulation if your existing insulation is shallower than 19 inches.
  • Basements: To determine whether you need basement insulation in an unfinished basement, check the rim joists. Compare the depth with an R-value map and chart to determine how much basement wall insulation to install.
  • Crawlspaces: To determine whether a vented crawlspace needs better insulation, check for the correct R-value between the floor joists. If the crawlspace is unvented, check the perimeter walls. The ground should be covered with a 6-mil polyethylene sheet to provide effective crawlspace insulation.
  • Exterior Walls: These often need additional insulation. You can check to see if your wall insulation is thick enough by removing outlet covers on the wall, but be sure the electricity is off before you begin.
  • Garages: Garages may require additional insulation in areas adjacent to air-conditioned spaces. Examine your garage walls and ceiling for areas in need of sealing.
  • Gaps, Cracks and Openings: Check your home for any places where air might be leaking out or where insects and small rodents might get in. Consider using a spray foam home insulation to quickly fill in the gaps. Apply window insulation to seal gaps around window frames. This will help to keep cool air in during summer and cold air out in the winter.

Should you use roll, batt or blown-in insulation? Rolls are good for filling in large areas and can easily be cut to size. Batts come pre-cut in different lengths, making them a good choice to install in framed spaces, like for wall insulation. Blown-in insulation installs with blowing machines, making it easy to add to areas like attics.

You can also consider radiant barrier products that both provide insulation and reflect heat to help keep your home comfortable. These are easy-to-handle, no-itch solutions for cathedral ceilings, garage doors, exterior walls, crawlspaces and more.

House Wrap and Tape

House wrap is another product that aids in insulating a home — but not in the same way as the insulation types mentioned above. You’ll still need those to increase energy efficiency and get the other benefits they provide. If you’re working on new construction, however, apply house wrap before the siding to help protect walls and framing from potential damage from moisture and air. When wrapping a house, you’ll also need house wrap tape to seal the seams. Shop Lowe’s to find house wrap supplies, including Tyvek house wrap, for your project.

At Lowe’s, we have everything you need to insulate your home, including Owens Corning® insulation and options from other trusted brands like Johns Manville, ROCKWOOL and GreenFiber. You can also use our insulation calculators to determine how much insulation to buy for your next project.
