Project Overview
Create a spacious and efficient 99-inch rectangular raised garden bed using 56 pieces of the 18-in L x 3-in H x 9-in D Granite Concrete Nova Wall Block and construction adhesive. This garden bed, measuring 45” W x 99” L x 12” H, is perfect for growing a variety of plants. It is recommended to use landscape fabric to line the interior cavity to prevent weed growth and improve soil retention.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Select and Prepare the Site
Choose a flat area in your yard for the garden bed.
Clear the site of grass, rocks, and debris.
Plan the Layout
Use the tape measure to mark out a 45-inch by 99-inch rectangular area.
Create the Base (if not building atop an existing footer or patio)
Dig a trench around the marked area, approximately 4 inches deep and 9 inches wide.
Fill the trench with paver base or gravel to a depth of 2 inches.
Use the tamper to compact the base, ensuring it is level.
TIP: If you are building on top of an existing footer or adding to your patio, you can use mortar, mixed to the manufacturer’s specifications, to level the first course.
Lay the First Layer of Blocks
Begin placing the Nova Wall Blocks along the outline, starting from one corner and working around the perimeter.
Ensure each block is level and fits tightly against its neighbor.
Use 14 blocks to complete the outer perimeter of the first layer.
Apply construction adhesive between each block to secure them in place.
Build the Subsequent Layers
Start the second layer by placing blocks directly over the first layer, ensuring the joints are staggered for added stability.
Apply construction adhesive between each block and layer.
Continue this process for a total of four layers, reaching a height of 12 inches. Each layer will use 14 blocks, totaling 56 blocks.
Install Landscape Fabric
Cut landscape fabric to fit the interior of the garden bed, ensuring it covers the bottom and sides.
Secure the fabric in place, overlapping edges to prevent soil from escaping and to block weed growth.
Final Touches
Backfill the interior of the garden bed with quality garden soil, ensuring it is well-draining.
Use the rubber mallet to gently tap the blocks into place, ensuring all blocks are secure.
Allow the construction adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Plant Your Garden
Fill the raised bed with your chosen plants, organizing them according to their sunlight and watering needs.
Tips for Success
Ensure the garden bed is placed in an area that receives the appropriate amount of sunlight for your plants.
Water your plants regularly and maintain the soil to ensure a healthy garden.
Rotate your crops seasonally to maintain soil fertility and reduce pests.
