A house fire can be one of the most dangerous and devastating events to happen to a family. But with a few home safety and fire safety additions, you can protect your home and family from potential harm.
Smoke detectors are an easy addition to a home. Whether battery powered or hardwired, they can alert you to both smoldering fires and open flames. Place them outside bedrooms, in hallways and in the kitchen. Some detectors also include a carbon monoxide detector to warn you of dangerous levels of this invisible, odorless and tasteless gas.
Fire extinguishers are recommended for each floor of your home, including the kitchen and garage. There are different types of fire extinguishers, and they’re rated based on the types of fires they put out. Type A fire extinguishers are the best choice for wood, paper, cloth or plastic. Type B extinguishers are useful for fires from materials like alcohol, oil, gas, paint and stains. Electrical fires, such as those caused by short circuits, call for type C. Type K fire extinguishers are meant to fight flames from combustible cooking liquids like fat, grease and oil.
While you’re updating the fire safety equipment, also consider updating your home security to keep your family safe. Easily install a home security system that includes security cameras, door sensors, window sensors, motion sensors and detectors.
