Couches, Sofas and Loveseats
A couch or sofa is one of the biggest furniture investments that you’ll make, so it’s important to determine what you need before purchasing. What size do you want? Do you prefer deep seating for a comfy, relaxed feel or would you prefer a more structured and formal sofa? Is your style modern, modern farmhouse, transitional or traditional?
You’ll also need to think about the fabric type. Leather, velvet, linen, cotton and polyester blends are the most popular. If you have kids or pets, there are a few options that are durable and easy to clean. Consider purchasing a sofa with slipcovers that you can take off and wash. For a budget-friendly option, sofas upholstered in microfiber are a good choice. Leather is a pricier option than other fabrics, but it’s also easier to wipe off and remove dirt and pet hair from.
Couches, Sofas and Loveseats
First, consider the size. For small apartments or a corner nook that you need to fill, consider a loveseat. Loveseats are typically under 60 inches in length and can accommodate two people. A medium couch or sofa can seat three people and measures up to 92 inches in length. Large sofas that exceed 92 inches in length look best in big rooms or open spaces.
Sectionals
Sectional sofas are L-shaped or U-shaped and work best in large living rooms where several people can comfortably spread out and relax.
Futons and Sleepers
If you frequently have guests, a futon or a sofa bed is a great solution — especially if you live in a small space. They serve as a sofa in the day but fold out to create an extra bed for sleepovers.
Chairs and Recliners
Whether you’re looking for a formal, structured chair or a big, comfy armchair that you can sink into and watch your favorite show, you can find the perfect choice to complete your living room. The most popular types include:
Accent Chairs
This is a general term that’s used for living room chairs. They’re available both with and without arms.
Club Chairs
These typically have a wide seat, arms and back for extra comfort.
Wingback Chairs
Wingback chairs are similar to club chairs, but they’re typically found in more formal living rooms. The back wraps around at the top for a comfortable feel.
Recliners
Kick back and relax with a recliner. Recliners can lie flat with an extended footrest for maximum comfort. If you want a recliner that’s easy to get in and out of, consider one that includes lift assistance. For the ultimate indulgence, purchase a massage chair.
Tables
Now that you have a sofa and chairs, you’ll need tables to complete the look. Coffee tables, end tables and console tables come in a variety of styles and materials to suit any living room.
Coffee Tables
Coffee tables sit in the middle of a seating arrangement. Generally, a coffee table should be between 16 to 20 inches high (or 2 inches below the sofa height). Tabletops are made of glass, wood or metal, but also come in marble, mirror, wood veneer and medium-density fiberboard (MDF). The table legs are often metal or wood.
End Tables
End tables or side tables flank each side of a sofa or sit next to a chair to hold table lamps, drinks, remotes and more. Look for end tables that are close to the same height as your sofa for easy reaching. End tables are usually between 20 to 24 inches in height. If you need additional storage, get end tables that have extra shelving or drawers.
Console Tables
Console tables work great placed in narrow spaces, such as entryways, against a bare living room wall or directly behind a sofa. These tables typically come in rectangular or demilune, or semi-circle, shapes, and the height varies from 28 to 36 inches.
Other Considerations
Regardless of the furniture that you purchase, the finishing touches warm up the space and give your living room character. Here are a few items that you should consider when refreshing or redoing your living room.
Home Décor Accessories
Add home accents such as books, vases, candles, bowls or plants to tabletops. Framed pictures personalize a space. Use a decorative tray to hold knickknacks and remote controls. You can transform neutral chairs and sofas with colorful throw pillows or a cozy throw. Store essentials, such as firewood or your favorite magazines, in a wicker basket.
Paint and Wallpaper
Create a cozy space by painting your living room a moody blue, deep green, rich gray or black. To create a light and bright open space, paint the walls white, cream, a light pastel or soft greige. Hang wallpaper on an accent wall for a bold statement.

Wall Décor and Mirrors
On a large wall, consider hanging one oversized piece of art or create a gallery wall of smaller pieces. A mirror over a credenza or fireplace is an elegant addition that can make a small room appear larger.
Curtains and Drapes
Window treatments can set the tone in your living room. Rich velvet drapes in jewel tones create a dark and moody vibe. Light linen drapes set a bright and airy scene. Hang curtains as close to the ceiling as possible to make the room feel larger.

Rugs
Whether you love Moroccan motifs, natural jute and sisal, warm sheepskin, or colorful, modern wool designs, you can find a rug to define your space. When selecting a size, make sure that the front legs of all of your furniture sit on top of the rug.

Lighting
Don’t forget the lighting. Place wall sconces, table lamps and floor lamps around a living room to create a warm and inviting space. Recessed lighting on dimmers are recommended to easily brighten a room for reading or to darken a room to watch a movie.
