Upgrade Deck Railings
One thing you can do to make your deck really stand out is update the railings. On wood decks, consider replacing the traditional wood balusters with metal. Sleek, black metal balusters accent a traditional wood deck with a modern touch.
If you want a new look for your composite railings, some systems make it easy to change the style of balusters. Just remove the top rails with a mallet and go from white to black balusters for a contemporary look.
If you replace the balusters on wood railings, plan on installing new top and bottom rails. The original rails will have visible fastener holes.
Deck Lighting Ideas
Lighting always makes a deck shine and it's really helpful on stairs. To install low-voltage lighting:
- Cut the holes.
- Mount the fixtures and covers.
- Secure the transformer near an outlet.
- Rout the cables.
- Connect the lights.
Solar lights are simple to mount because they don't have cables.
Adding lighted post caps is a simple way to illuminate your new gathering space. These deck post lights are available in solar and wired models.
On the decking, puck lights can be installed using a drill with a hole saw. The lights sit flush with the decking and provide a nice, soft glow around the perimeter.
Wiring is easiest to install while framing your deck.
If you’re mounting wired post lights on composite railing, you’ll have to disassemble the railing to run the wiring. Then drill a hole through the sleeve, run the wiring inside the sleeve and through the decking, then slide the sleeve back over the posts. Attach the light and railing components.
Deck Benches
Use deck materials to create a matching bench for extra seating. You may even be able to use materials left from your deck build. On a composite deck, use treated lumber for the framing and composite decking for a smooth seating surface.
Deck Skirting
Deck skirting is an integral part of any deck, especially if you’re going to use the space underneath your deck as storage. Skirting also provides a finished look and can add to the overall aesthetic of your deck. Need deck skirting ideas? Lattice panels and deck boards are two commonly used materials, although stone and brick can also be used as skirting.
Lattice skirting is available in multiple materials including vinyl, wood and plastic. One of the most popular deck skirting options, lattice panels complement a variety of home styles including traditional, modern, farmhouse and more. While they provide ventilation with their open design, they also offer ample coverage for items you want to store underneath your deck. Whether you want easy-to-maintain vinyl deck skirting or a cheaper alternative like pressured-treated wood, lattice will instantly add beauty and privacy to your deck.
Deck boards — available in wood, composite and vinyl — can also be used as deck skirting. They can be installed horizontally or vertically with or without spaces in between, depending on the look you’re going for. Wood deck boards can be painted to match the exterior of your home while composite deck boards and vinyl deck boards come in a range of colors to choose from. Wood provides a warm, natural aesthetic while composite and vinyl deck boards offer durability and, some styles can resemble the look of real wood.
