Measure and Mark
To install a towel hook in your bathroom, you will need to find the right location. Here’s how to measure and mark the area for towel hooks.
- Irrespective of the location you choose, a good rule to keep in mind is that your towel hooks should be installed at least 70 inches from the floor. Nevertheless, make sure that the desired height allows easy accessibility for everyone at home.
- If you have to install a towel hook behind your bathroom door, use a measuring tape and find the center point of your doors. Mark this with a carpenter's pencil.
- To install towel hooks on walls, use a stud finder to find studs behind the wall. After you have decided on your desired height, place the stud finder flush against the wall.
- Turn on the device and slide it across the wall. The stud finder should beep when it has located a stud. Mark the spot.
For better drilling in of the screws and the wall brackets, place the wall bracket on the spot you have marked and trace the points where the screws need to be drilled in.
Drill-In Holes
- Drilling in a pilot hole will allow for the mounting screws to fit in without damaging the surface.
- Use a drill with the right bit size and drill holes through your marked spots.
The best drill bit size for your pilot hole depends on the screw that came with your towel hook, but typically you'll want a bit that's slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw shank (the main body, not the threads).
Mounting the Wall Brackets
- Align the mounting brackets over the drilled holes.
- Insert the top screw through the hole in the bracket and use a screw gun to drill in it. Make sure that you don’t drill in the first screw all the way in.
- Repeat the step with the bottom screw and this time, secure both the screws taut against the wall.
- Before you tighten both the screws, make sure that your mounting bracket is well-aligned. Use a level to ensure this.
How to Install the Towel Hook
- Place the towel hook right over the mounting bracket and make sure that it is flush against the wall.
- Use an Allen key and tighten the screw that is usually situated on the lower end of your towel hook.
- Keep turning it until you have tightened the screw and it is snug against the wall.
An Alternative Method
If you are unable to locate wall studs behind the wall or have to install towel hooks on your door, attach a wall anchor before you drill in the screws. Here’s how:
- Instead of using a bit that is slightly smaller than the screw, use a bit that is almost the same thickness as your wall anchor.
- After drilling the holes, drive the anchors in using a hammer until they fit snugly.
- For the installation of the wall brackets and the towel hook, follow the same steps as above.
Final Check and Maintenance
- For a final check, give a slight tug to your towel hook to make sure that it is fitted snugly and securely. Hng a dry or a wet towel just to confirm that the hook won’t fall off.
- Keep in mind the weight limitations of your towel hook and anchor and avoid overloading the hook.
- As your bathroom is continuously exposed to moisture, make it a point to wipe your towel hooks occasionally, especially if they are made of metal and are prone to rust.
