Manage Your Project

Use the following information and timeline to make sure your do-it-yourself kitchen project stays on track and is completed successfully. Remember, you can do some of the work and let Lowe’s install the rest.

Good to Know

Try to plan your kitchen project so that it’s not taking place at a really busy time of year — or life. Consider work and school schedules, children’s activities, holidays, travel plans, and visits by friends or relatives. For example, if you’re having guests for the holidays, that could be a great motivation to start planning a kitchen refresh early in the year.

Do-It-Yourself Timeline

When planning a kitchen remodel, it’s good to keep this general timeline in mind.

Six Months to Start

Research local building regulations and find out which permits and rules govern your do-it-yourself project plans. Some communities require homeowners doing their own work to pass tests before taking on renovation projects. Create a design workbook and open a MyLowe’s Rewards account to save examples of products, ideas and rooms you like. Need help getting started? Refer back to the Inspiration page.

Four Months to Start

Draw an accurate floor plan of your kitchen or hire a professional to do one. Make copies and carry it with you. Make a list of all the things you need to buy or secure, project by project, including tools and equipment. Visit your Lowe’s store and Lowes.com to check out options and products.

Make a detailed budget for the project. If you’ll be dining out more while your kitchen’s in progress, be sure to include that. Need help with budgeting? Learn how to create a budget.

Three Months to Start

Decide on materials and products and then place orders at your local Lowe’s or Lowes.com.

Two Months to Start

Find a secure, temperature-controlled place to store tools and materials that won’t fit in your home. Make a list of all the items.

One Week to Start

Take before pictures. Empty the room of all items. Arrange for pickup or disposal of old appliances and materials. Shield floors, nearby rooms and air vents with protective coverings. Set up a temporary kitchen (with a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker) in another room. If you don’t have a place to do dishes, stock up on paper plates and plastic utensils.

Work Begins

Take pictures of your kitchen’s progress each time you complete another step.

When It’s Done

Make sure all work meets code and has passed inspection according to local regulations. Make sure the site has been thoroughly cleaned, including air vents. Scan warranties for purchased materials and products (store them in your MyLowe’s Rewards account).

Make sure all bills have been paid and keep copies of all receipts. Compare actual expenses to your original budget. Finally, take after pictures and enjoy your new kitchen.
