From cabinet colors and tile to countertop selections and a shiplap range hood, we'll show you a modern farmhouse kitchen look that’s more refined than rustic.

Cabinets and Paint Colors

Cool grays are being replaced in kitchens with warmer tones, such as taupe or greige (a combination of beige and gray). This soft neutral on the lower cabinets is called Woodrow Wilson Putty by Valspar®. We also added a deep blue-gray to the bottom of the island for some added contrast.

In this modern farmhouse kitchen, we used Shaker cabinets and then added black matte hardware for a rustic finish. Learn more about cabinet styles and colors in our buying guide.

Contrasting Countertops

In this modern farmhouse kitchen, we selected a mix-and-match approach to our countertops. White and gray quartz countertops are a stylish and smart selection for this L-shaped kitchen. Quartz is low-maintenance and easy to clean while also resisting scratches and stains.

But to break up all the white and give it that farmhouse feel, we selected a butcher block countertop for the center island. Butcher block has been making a resurgence in kitchens. It has a warm look and is antibacterial, durable and affordable.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to make a change to a room — and this kitchen is no exception.

The two polished brass pendants over the island bring a modern aesthetic while the black metal sconce over the sink has an industrial rustic feel. Recessed lighting subtly lights the areas that the pendants and sconces can't cover.

Tile Backsplash

A kitchen with a brass-inlay subway tile backsplash, open shelving, a range and range hood.

Tile backsplashes are an easy way to bring color and visual interest to a kitchen, bathroom or laundry room. In this kitchen, the tile is the star. At first, it looks like a simple white subway, but it's so much more. This Carrara marble elongated tile with a slim brass inlay creates a stunning backdrop. Since there isn't any upper cabinetry, we ran the marble up to the open shelving for an even bolder look.

Tiling a backsplash is a good DIY project. For tools and instructions, read our article and watch this video.

Tip

If you're trying to save money on your remodel or refresh, simply run the tile behind the stove for an affordable and impactful alternative.

Range Hood

A simple range hood gets a rustic makeover with this shiplap surround. Rather than painting it white, we stained the oak planks. Then the same wood was carried throughout the kitchen with open shelving for a cohesive look. Cutting boards and utensils in light wood give a vintage feel while glass and chrome keep things modern.

Sink

Round out your farmhouse kitchen look and add country charm with a farmhouse sink. Durable and stylish, farmhouse sinks, also known as apron sinks, are characterized by their deep cut basin that gives you extra capacity and are available in a variety of materials, colors, shapes and configurations. For durability, a stainless steel or fireclay farmhouse sink stands up to chips and cracks.

Another material that passes the durability test is a copper farmhouse sink. Pair it with a rustic bronze kitchen faucet for a coordinated look. Over time, the copper farmhouse sink will develop a patina that many find attractive. White is the most popular farmhouse sink color, however, a black farmhouse sink adds a touch of drama to your kitchen.
