Pendant Lighting for Kitchens, Dining Areas and More

If you're looking for a light source that blends functionality and flair, pendant lighting may be just what you need. Pendant lights, which are also called drop or suspended lights, are single light fixtures that hang from the ceiling from a cord, chain or a metal rod. Lately, pendant lights have become a popular lighting trend. Unlike chandeliers, whose diffused light might not provide enough illumination to your room, pendant lights can provide a customized look that's both bright and focused for every room of your home.

Where to Use Pendant Lights

When most people think about pendant light, they think of kitchen pendant lighting. Sure, pendant lights are great over sinks, work areas and kitchen islands, but modern pendant lighting is a lot more versatile than that! Try industrial pendant lights over your bar to create an urban, industrial vibe. Hang single or double pendant lights in the bedroom to replace bedside reading lamps and unclutter nightstands. Upgrade your bathroom without spending a fortune by swapping in modern pendant lighting over the bathroom vanity.

To make your pendant lamps really shine, be sure they don’t blend in with objects in the background. For example, if you have white cabinets in the kitchen and you’re choosing pendant lights to go over the kitchen island, choose a finish, shape and style that will contrast with background items in your visual field.

How to Hang Pendant Lights

Hanging pendant lights can be intimidating. Generally, pendant lights should hang 12 to 20 inches below an 8-foot ceiling. For each additional foot of ceiling, add 3 inches. For example, if you have a 9-foot ceiling, the pendants will hang 15-23 inches below ceiling level. You can still hang pendants if you have low ceilings, too. Hang a single pendant in a small room to highlight focal points, like art or architectural design.

When it comes to spacing your lights, aim to hang your pendants about 2 feet apart. Get a professional look when you follow the design Rule of Three. A group of three globe pendant lights, for example, makes a dramatic impact hanging above a large kitchen island.

Popular Pendant Light Styles

Like chandeliers, pendant lights come in a variety of styles, colors and finishes so you can mix and match between choices to complement any home. Want to add a touch of mid-century modern to your space? Try domed pendants. Create a vintage vibe in your office or powder room with Edison pendants. Create a rustic vibe in the office with farmhouse pendants, or turn a teenager's room into a boho-inspired getaway with wicker and rattan pendants.
