Plumbing Tools for DIY Fixes

Plumbing and Repairs

No matter the house, your plumbing will probably need a bit of repair from time to time. Depending on the repair task, sometimes all you need is a part or specific plumbing tools. In apartments, this can be a tricky liability, but if you have the option of completing your own bathroom repairs, it may be simple to replace or repair parts. The most common bathroom mishaps are a leaking faucet, a clogged drain, low water pressure and leaky toilets. Many of these minor problems can be repaired by a plumbing novice to save time and money. From shower parts to toilet repair kits, there are tools to quickly and easily make these repairs.

Sinks and Faucets

Fixing a leaky sink faucet is an inexpensive and easy task for individuals with little to no background in plumbing. The culprit is usually a worn-out washer or gasket, which can easily be replaced. A loose o-ring can be the cause of leaking in compression, ball, ceramic and cartridge faucets. Corrosion in the valve seat can be checked by placing a wrench in the valve seat and turning counterclockwise. If the seal is proper, the valve seat shouldn't move. If it does move, that may be the cause of the leaky sink, and can be fixed by inserting a valve seat sleeve.

Toilets

When toilets leak or have other minor issues, a simple fix may take care of the problem. You can purchase a toilet repair kit that contains all the tools you'll need for a standard 1.28 or 1.6 GPF toilet model. Most kits include a two-inch flush valve that changes height when turned 90 degrees, which is helpful because no cutting is required. The kit will also include a toilet flapper, which is adjustable in most cases. Many of these kits include other adjustable parts that promote conserving water. Stainless steel hardware also comes with the kit.

For a leaky toilet, the cause could be a loose fit where the water meets the toilet. However, if the water pools, faulty bolts and washers could be the culprit. These can be tightened or easily replaced. There are various types of bolts and washers to choose from, ranging in size, toilet brand and model.

Bathtubs and Showers

When it comes to bathtubs and showers, leaking may be due to washers and loose-fitting bolts. Consider purchasing a repair kit that includes polish, gel paste, sandpaper, a wooden application stick, an alcohol pad and hardener. These tub and shower kits are ideal for white gel-coated or fiberglass bathtubs and shower enclosures. Another cause for issues with your bathtub or shower might be a faulty drain. Drains can corrode due to the finish rubbing off over time, but they can be replaced quickly and easily. For bathtubs, an old or damaged stopper connection or face plate can also be replaced.
