Durable and Reliable Outdoor Stair Stringers
Building a new outdoor space for your home? Get started on building stairs with a set of stair stringers. Made into either boards or frames, stringers on stairs for outdoors span across the sides and down the middle of each of your deck steps.
A stringer in a staircase is a frame or board designed to make a staircase safe to walk on as well as improve the treads’ load-bearing support. In addition to durability, the stringer can offer added resistance to impact, water and other elements. Staircases up to 36 inches wide need at least three stringers, with wider staircases requiring four or more.
Common materials for stringers include wood and steel. Wood and steel stringers differ in appearance, hardness and other properties. While you can choose the material that looks better, one will ultimately perform better than the other, depending on your deck.
Wood stringers are more customizable than their steel counterparts. If you’re building a deck with more than six steps, it’s easy to cut wood stringers to the number of steps needed. While wood stair stringers come unfinished, you can treat or seal them for added water resistance. Steel stringers are more
durable, so they work to preserve the life of the deck longer than wood stringers. Certain steel stringers even have powder-coated finishes to resist scratches and corrosion.
Most steps for outdoor decks have a rise of 6 to 7-1/2 inches. Depending on the stringer you choose, a five-step stringer can accommodate decks around 30 to 37-1/2 inches high. For staircases with more than five steps, order stringers with six steps or buy multiple stringers and combine them.
