Measure & Prepare Your Space

Consider Your Setup

Whether you’re considering side-by-side or stacked machines or plan on using pedestals, think about how you want the appliances set up in your space and account for the configuration in your measurements. Side-by-side machines will take up more room horizontally, while stacked machines or machines on pedestals will need more room vertically.

Measure Your Space

Measure for height, width and depth in the space where your new washer and dryer will go. Make sure the measurements allow for room at the back and on the sides for air flow, vents and hookups. Also account for any design features, such as front- or top-load doors, to ensure there will be enough room to fully open the doors.

How to Measure for a New Washer & Dryer

Check Fuel Type

Do you have an electric or a gas hookup? For electric dryers, you’ll need access to an outlet. Gas models require a gas line. Make sure to purchase models that’ll work with the hookup currently available in your space.

Wash and Dry With New Laundry Appliances

Laundry Machines for Your Lifestyle

Finding the perfect washer and dryer to fit your needs is easy at Lowe’s. Select from the best electric dryers and washers from top brands like GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag® and Whirlpool®. Shop the single units we carry, such as Samsung front-load washers, LG dryers and more. Additionally, our selection includes those with specific features that can make life easier, including ventless dryers and Wi-Fi-compatible washer and dryer sets. And that’s just the beginning.

Choosing a New Washer

As you shop for a clothes washer, consider energy-efficient models. These machines use less water and electricity and are available in front-load or top-load options.

Be sure to take a look at top-loading washers. They have the largest capacity, come with agitator or impeller-driven washing options, and are usually more budget friendly than other kinds of washers. Washing machines with agitators feature a rod-like structure in the center of the drum. It’s designed with blades or fins that spin or twist, helping move clothes around in the washer to get them clean. An impeller is a low-profile, raised disk that’s typically gentler on clothes. Top-load models also keep you from needing to bend or kneel to add or remove clothes.

Front-load options also offer advantages. They have a more efficient impeller wash that’s gentler on clothes. You can use it with pedestals, which raise the washer off the ground for more comfortable loading and unloading. They also offer extra storage space for laundry supplies. If you have a compatible washer, you can opt for a pedestal washer that fits underneath and tackle two loads of laundry at once. If you’re looking to maximize space, some machines can be stacked.

Choosing a New Dryer

At Lowe’s, we have both gas and electric options from the names you know, including Samsung electric dryers.

Gas dryers dry clothes faster and reduce the chance of static. Keep in mind that these dryers need professional installation and may require special venting and accessories. These are a great option if you already have a gas line in your laundry room.

Electric dryers are more common than gas dryers. They require a three- or four-prong plug for installation.

We also offer ventless dryers — a great option for those who live in high-rises or other places without dryer vents and don’t want to make modifications to their homes. These units heat and tumble clothes dry by recycling the hot air in the machine. The alternative to ventless dryers is vented dryers, which require an exterior vent to release hot air as clothes are tumbled dry.

Limited Space

If you do laundry in a small space, consider washer-dryer combos, compact washers and dryers, stackable washers and dryers, or portable washing machines. These options are great if you need a washer and dryer for apartment living.

Before Buying a New Washer and Dryer

You’ll want to make sure that the new machines will fit in the space. Choosing a washer and dryer that are the same size as your old ones is an easy way to ensure they’ll work in your laundry room. If you think you might have room for something larger, take measurements to see what size can be accommodated. Measurements should include an extra inch of space on both sides of the washer and both sides of the dryer for proper airflow and at least 6 inches behind the machines to allow for venting and hoses. It’s important to stick to the same hookup you currently have, either gas or electric. Also, consider your washing and drying needs — machines come with different settings and features — and whether you prefer to have a matching dryer and washing machine set.

Whether you just want to find the best top-loading washing machine on the market or you want to look at options from specific brands — like Maytag® washers and dryers, Whirlpool® washers and Whirlpool® dryers, or Samsung washers and Samsung dryers — our selection is sure to have what you’re looking for. Look for washer and dryer deals throughout the year to help you save on the perfect pair. We’ll also help you save money by offering Special Financing options and our Lowest Price Guarantee. Holidays and holiday weekends are generally good times to buy new washers and dryers. Another good time is the beginning of autumn. That’s when brands typically release new models and need to sell the current stock to make room. Once you’ve made your decision, let us help you get everything set up and ready to tackle laundry day with our installation service.
